Hi
Can anyone shed some light as to what a sleep study entails
We saw a new ped yesterday....she thinks Zach has major sinus/allergy issues and rec seeing a new ENT and having a sleep study done (I told her how since he was born he sleeps 12hrs at night and wakes exhausted....)
I told her if he needs his adenoids out so be it...but is there any non-invasive testing to confirm his adenoids are enlarged or causing issues sleeping/breathing etc
FYI....I mentioned we were seeing a new Gi the end of the mnth...waited 4 mnths for the appt
She said he was smart, but parents have been complaining about his bedside manner
Ugh

Well, my dh had a sleep study done...confirmed he does have sleep apnea and he now wears a device called a CPAP. Basically, they hooked him up to all kinds of monitoring devices and he stayed overnight at the hospital for the test. A tech was monitoring him and woke him up about 1am to put him on the CPAP b/c he had already had several apnea episodes. Once he got the CPAP, he has been so much better, not yawning all the time and his memory and energy have improved.
Seems to me that one of Rachel's little guys had one done recently too...
Hope the new GI is good....sometimes bedside manner is ruled out by skill...let's hope it's the case for you! :)

Here's the link to Rachel's post about the sleep study...

I sent Rachel a pm about your post so she can chime in once she gets back online. :)
I *think* in a sleep study, a child is attached to electrodes that monitor the type of sleep s/he's getting. (They keep track of respiration, brain waves, etc.)
As far as I've heard, the child is in a room where researchers can observe his/her movements/sleep patterns, as well as whatever they've hooked him up to just to see what's going on during sleep.
I've never had one done, so my information should be taken with a HUGE grain of salt--only parroting what I've heard...
BTW--Good bedside manner trumps smarts. I mean, nobody wants an idiot for a doc, but smart and rude don't cut it with me. :-( I really hope you're able to find a good GI!
Ignore my last post--Miori was posting at the same time. Read hers!

Thanks everyone!
Is it that hard to find a competent Dr whi has good bedside manners
In all honestly, I am getting to the end of my rope...If I start talking to a new Gi about Zach's issues and he is a complete JERK...I night just slap him...Ok, maybe not,....but you know what I mean :)

We are fortunate as the GI that Emma sees is a smart lady and has excellent bedside manners.... My granddaughter had a GI that had awful manners and who cared how smart he was because he made my daughter feel like it is all her fault that the child had a pancreatic birth defect.

Hi Kim, we have had two sleep studies done, just add them to the huge list lol.
They actually aren't so bad, ifyour child will sleep, Both the times we went everyones child slept except mine. Parker had only about 5 hours of solid sleep both times we went.
What happens is they put electrodes on the head as well as ones on the tummy, one on their finger and one under their nose and a few on the face. Then they go to sleep and they record the sleep patterns and also the breating etc.
Most times you sleep in there, wake in the morning and take it off. Miori posted a link, that may have the photo, if not I will post it again if you need.
If he is sleeping and waking tierd usually indicates he is not having solid periods of sleep, MOST sleep apnea is obstructive and they take the tonsils and adenoids out and it generally goes. Parkers is reflux related, more of a change in his breathing patterns to accomodate pain. Now we are on the losec the apnea has decreased to what is considered normal amounts.
Another sign is snoring orheavy breathing, this is a sign of the obstructive apnea.
It wasn't a bad test to have, just that Parker is a fuss pot, also it was here that I realised the twitching wasn't right because people saw it and also I saw it all night KWIM, you don't usually get that.
Hope that helps.
