Thank you so much for being willing to give of some of your time to answer some questions for us!

My question is...My son is 3 and 1/2 months old.And has been on Zantac for reflux for about 3 weeks now. He is doing much better, although he does still reflux a good bit.

My ped. would like to start solids next month to help weigh down the stomach content in hopes of lessening the reflux.

Since I am totally breastfeeding,I was hoping to wait on starting solids.(My older son has asthma and some food allergies.)
Do the benefits outweigh the risks of starting solids so early?

Thank you for your help!

Rachel

Hi,

If he is doing better, why rock the boat and add solids early? That would be what I would think. The current thinking with a child prone to allergies is that breast milk alone for six months may have some long term effects in terms of lessening permanently the risk he will develop allergies. I would wait.

This doesn't mean your doctor is wrong. This is just how I see things.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
