Hello Dr. Olson.

Just a brief run down here...I have a 7 year old with ADHD and Hypoglycemia, and a 2 yeard old with GERD.

My seven year old looks sickly skinny, his ribs stick out, his collar bone buldges out. He weighs about 42 lbs and is 44 inches tall. He complains of Stomache aches non stop and always has loose stools never a normal solid BM. I have discussed this with his ped who does not take me seriously as I worked for him for almost 6 years, even at his physical last week he charted him and to me if your not on the growth chart wouldn't that represent FTT? We are moving to Chicago next week and I need to know what kinds of things you would do if he was your patient so I know what to push for with his new PED.

I am so tired of fighting with doctors to listen to me for their health. Andrew went 17 months undiagnosed and untreated for GERD as no one would listen, just kept saying he was a puker to deal with it even though he was severly FTT and only weighed 17 pounds at one year of age and didn't hit the 20 pound mark until he was 16 months of age. When he finally got the treatment he needed and was scoped he had Chronic Gastritis on top of the GERD. I am still waiting for his GI to return my call as he needs his meds refilled before we move. Andrew has had the EGD, and an upper GI. What plan of action would you reccomend for him..for me to ask his new GI. He is approximately 25 pounds, barely eats anymore, extremely fussy, restless. He takes Reglan 1.5ml's three times daily, Prevacid 15mg once a day, and Mylanta Supreme 2tsp three times a day.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can give me. I appreciate your time.

Hi,

Your oldest with ADHD may be on a stimulant medicine that can suppress appetite and cause one not to grow. Kids on no meds with his GI problems could be evaluated for celiac disease, quite common in kids who have diarrhea and aren't growing well.

Hard to say what your youngest should be on or what the next doctor should do. If he has a well established diagnosis of GERD, then treating him more aggressively might be the answer. Really difficult in this forum to answer your question, not being privy to all the tests, course and discussions you had with your other doctor.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
