View Full Version : The majority of Ava's fluid intake...
AvasMommy 09-02-2006, 07:16 PM should not be her bath water, correct? Why is it that she will drink maybe 6-8 oz of fluids in a whole entire day, yet when she gets in the tub, she'll use each of her stacking cups (10 of them!) to take a sip of the nasty water she's been marinating in?
It's disgusting!
I put this in this forum since it was the closest I could get to "liquid intake". I know other gerdlings drastically cut their liquid intake, but in the last few weeks, Ava hasn't even been averaging 10oz a day of bm, whole milk, water, pediasure, and yogurt...combined. She takes her prilosec in applesauce, which has water in it, but am I wrong in thinking that this little bit of fluids is not enough to live on?
Her eating is still not great, but I'm managing to get little bits into her here and there, but the liquids are what have me most concerned. Anyone have any advice for me on this one? I'm constantly pushing her sippy into her hands or trying to get her to nurse, but she just turns away and screams!
Help us!
Debbie 09-02-2006, 07:22 PM Maybe she's teething again Lindsay?
Jayden eats popcycles..maybe she would like that...
I don't know about the bf though can you put it in her food?
AvasMommy 09-02-2006, 07:28 PM No teething, I thought the same thing Debbie. I tried popsicles, but no deal. She won't touch anything remotely juice or pedialyte related, although once I did get her to drink some watered down grape gatorade when she was like this a few months ago.
I can understand the solid food thing, but why liquids? Maybe she knows that a tummy full of liquid will come up faster than just solids in her tummy?
I can't force fluids on her more than I already am, so I just don't know what to do. Her poops are more thick and solid (still only about thick PB) than they've ever been, very sticky...for her poop to be this solid (she's the loose stool queen), I know she's on her way to dehydration. What else can I do though?????
Debbie 09-02-2006, 07:37 PM What will she drink and what will she drink from?
Maybe if she likes to drink her bath water you could let her play in a clean sink of water and she might drink then ...sounds gross but if she will get some more fluids in what the heck it's better than an IV.
I know you already know this too but just keep offering things to her.....I know how frustrating this is Jayden was doing the same thing..then just started drinking again one day......always a guessing game...I hate it!
AvasMommy 09-02-2006, 07:40 PM LOL about the sink! She loves her sippies, makes her feel like a big kid, but one sip and she's done. She's always been a sipper and a snacker when it came to bf, and she never took more than a four oz bottle.
She can't use a straw yet, but she likes it if I either let her drink out of my open cup or water bottle, or put a really small amount of something in an open cup and let her just go for it.
She's always got a drink handy, but just can't seem to get them in.
Becky in NM 09-02-2006, 08:56 PM For about six months (from the time D was 10 to 16 months old), he drank NOTHING! I forcefed him purees to keep him hydrated -- and gave him yogurt for his calcium. Even though I wanted him to get lots of calories, I usually fed him a ton of watery veggies like carrots because I was more concerned about simply keeping him hydrated.
ConnorsMommy 09-02-2006, 09:34 PM Connor does the same thing Lindsay. When I fill up his waterplay table he sticks his head in and takes a drink rofl. Same thing with the bathtub. I don't know what it is about it. I wish I had some great advice for you! Connor actually likes his bottles it's solids I have a problem with.
Miori 09-02-2006, 11:06 PM Lindsay...I can't remember...did the new GI have any ideas for you on all of this?
I like Debbie's idea about the clean water in the sink, though. Sounds a bit out there, but whatever works, right?
Ice cubes...will she play with a bowl of those? Just trying to think of things here...
My ds Aaron would drink his bath water, pool water gross I know, he loved it too! I had to watch him like a hawk and he was really quick as well.
perhaps if she get small amounts of fluid really frequently that will be enought. Sorry not much help.
sixdogssixcats 09-03-2006, 07:22 AM This may sound silly, but what about using those stacking cups to offer her a real drink if she thinks it's fun to drink from them?
AvasMommy 09-03-2006, 01:25 PM Thanks guys! I've been trying to force the purees on her Becky, I always try to make her eat the whole thing of applesauce w/ her prilosec, just to make sure she's gettting a little bit of water.
Good idea on the stackers Lesley...maybe if I put a sip or two in each one we could make it like a "taste test" and she'd fall for it?
I just got home from work, dh said she only ate about 1/4 of her applesauce and has had about 4 oz to drink so far today!!! I just really don't want to see her get dehydrated!
