My daughter has her scope scheduled for early tomorrow morning. She is 2 years, 4 months old. She had her last one when she was 6 months old & has had GERD since birth.

She visited her ped & GI last month and they agreed she needed to be scoped with biopsies. Her GI said it was to check for damage and secondary causes of reflux. I wasn't totally with it and didn't ask her what she meant by secondary causes. Anyone know what this means? Curious...

I'm pretty sure the secondary causes they're talking about include things like food intolerances, milk/soy protein intolerances, hernia or other physical issues, metabolic disorders, and eosinophilic esophagitis.

Sometimes, one or more of these issues can cause or exacerbate reflux. The 'scope's biopsies will show intolerances, etc. and the pictures taken can show any physical abnormalities.

I hope that all goes well for you--please keep us posted!

My daughter is scheduled tomorrow to be scoped too!!I am really nervous. she's 7 months. anyways, they are doing biopsies for food allergies and to see if there is any irritation. the secondary causes could be the allergies/reactions. anyways, i hope things work out well. take care

My son's scope three months ago releaved a haital hernia that we never knew was there. The GI thinks that the hernia is what is causing James' reflux and it made sense. We even got a picture of it and I was surprised how big the opening was. I do hope your daughter's scope gives you all some answers. Please let us know how it goes.

Vanessa's scope went well today. She is up and running about the house as usual now. Her GI said everything looked normal, but she is waiting to find out the results of the biopsies to know for sure. She said often things look normal to the eye, but there can be things that show up in the biopsies that you can't see. We will know the results at the end of next week. Thanks for the feedback...makes total sense now. I'll keep you posted.
