This is long so bear with me

Chris's cousin found out last week that her little boy (baby) has reflux. He was puking constantly, Monday they put him into the hospital because he had lost down to 7lb, I'm not sure how old he is. Anyway, he was dehydrated. I guess while in there they ran some test to see "what" was causing his constant vomiting, they found out that he has pyloric stenosis.
Now, she said in her email to me

Hey, not sure if you have talked to Brenda yet or not but let's see
today is Wed. and we have been at UK children's hospital since Monday.
John-Thomas was dehydrated and had lost down to 7lbs 2.5 oz!!!!! That is
sooo scary. He has been diagnosed with Pyloricsinosis. Which is where
the muscle between the stomach and intestine shrinks and closes so that
food can not pass through and has no where to go but up. He will have
surgery in the morning where the will go in and cut that muscle so that
it relaxes. Once this is done within two hours he will be eating again
with guaranteed no PUKE!!!! YAY. Tom and I ran home for a little bit
to get some things settled while my mom and dad are at the hospital with
him. It's so hard sitting there trying to console a fusy baby when I
know he's just hungry. He hasn't been alowed to eat since Monday at
noon!!! The surgeon doing the procedure has done more than 1000 of them
and the actual procedure takes only 10mins to complete. Thank you so
much for all of the information on reflux it was very helpfull. I am
just completely relieved to know what is wrong and that we can fix him.
Think about us tomarrow, it's going to be a long morning I know. See ya
soon!

Love, amy

So, my question is, should they still watch for reflux issues??? I mean, just because they fix that muscle, doesn't mean that he will be reflux free does it? I have no experience in this, and I don't want to rain on her parade, but I want her to be prepared.

Maybe the doctor diagnosed the reflux prematurely? Did they do any testing to confirm the reflux or was it just diagnosed based on the vomiting?

If the baby truly does have reflux in addition to the pyloric stenosis, it may alleviate the vomiting to some degree, I would think.

I agree with Jane. If it is just the Plyoric Stenosis his symptoms should be alleviated after the surgery. If He also has reflux it could lessen the symptoms. I hope that he is puke free after his surgery:hug: Connor had an ultrasound done for Plyoric Stenosis and I almost wished that he did have it because at least they could fix that. Let us know how everything goes!

Thanks. I just didn't know anything about it and I didn't want her to be dissapointed if he still had reflux symptoms, you know?! And I wanted her to be watching still for reflux.
I haven't heard anything at all, so I will update you when I do.

Hi ladies couldnt help myself lol.
I was born with pyloric stenosis although back then 20+ years ago
there didnt seem to know much about it I had the surgery at 10 - 14 days old and from what my mom says i didnt have any problems after that as far as reflux.
I did however drop down from 6 pounds to a mere 2 mounds before I was dianosed with it. good luck. - Stephanie

This is my first post here.

My 3-WEEK-old (*happy* birthday today, Michael!) son had surgery for pyloric stenosis on his 2-week birthday but the vomiting has stayed the same or maybe even gotten worse so now they're saying it's reflux and he's on Zantac and Reglan. The Reglan was just prescribed by our pediatrician today because Michael's down to 7 lbs., 13 oz. from his birth weight of 8 lbs., 6 oz.

But after giving him his first dose of Reglan this afternoon, my husband took him to the ER tonight because his screaming got worse when he threw up after his next feeding and we can't go another night with him up every hour screaming. He's been like this for the last 48 hours and unfortunately, my husband and I have minimal outside babysitting support, so the 3 weeks since he was born have been hell. Michael's pyloric stenosis incision also became infected so he's on amoxycillin for that, too.

AND we have a 2-year-old son who is completely confused and distraught by the turmoil from the new baby.

I guess I should have posted this on the "vent" board, but I saw "pyloric stenosis" and had to share my unfortunate scenario, especially when I saw that the doctor "guaranteed" that the baby wouldn't throw up anymore after having the surgery. Our pediatrician AND the surgeon both told us to expect Michael to continue spitting up after the surgery, just [obviously] not to the extent that he had been throwing up prior to the surgery. So we were hopeful and excited to see the vomiting diminish, but it certainly hasn't.

Well, they had the surgery, but now the doc says that the baby has colic.
Hmm... wonder if it has ANYTHING to do with reflux??!!!
