on friday. I hope it all goes well. I keep reading and reading on this about all the tests, i feel comfortable w/the surgeon since he is the head of the department. As for anesthesia, that';s a tricky thing. It scares me. This baby is just 7 months old, has been through the ringer w/tests, hospitals, meds, etc since day 1. We are suppose to go to Cape code this weekend on friday, which we are not going that day, but what do you think about saturday thru monday. Can someone give me an idea of what to expect post Endoscopy.
thanks

Haven't been through it...just wanted to wish you luck and send a ((HUG))!
My dd had the endoscopy done at the beginning of this year. The anesthesia is the part that worries a lot of parents; however, most of us who have been through this had no issues.
Here's what happened in our case--so you know a bit about what to expect.
Bethany was not allowed to have anything other than clear liquids (which means no formula or breastmilk) after midnight the night before the test. The morning of the test we came to the hospital and we had to sign forms, etc. When it was time for her to go back, I was allowed to go to the OR with her and held her while they started the anesthesia. She cried and tried to fight the mask; however, she was out very quickly. It's hard to watch, but comforting that your face is the last your baby sees before drifting off to sleep.
I walked back out and waited with my dh--the test was over in about 15 or 20 minutes. It seems like much longer, but it's really not a long procedure.
I then went back to the recovery area and held B while she came out of the anesthesia. Be warned, young kids who are coming off anesthesia tend to be very cranky, hot, beet red and very, very gassy. She whined/cried and writhed around, as she wasn't fully awake, but was agitated. Her tummy was rock hard, which I was told is very normal, and as she struggled to pass gas, her tummy began to soften and she appeared more comfortable.
She was really lethargic/sleepy the rest of the day. The next day she was still a bit less active than normal, but was otherwise okay. By the third day, she was back to her old self.
As for going away after the endoscopy, it's up to you. Watch and see how Keilani does the first day or two--if all appears to be returning to normal, I don't *think* it would be an issue to go away for the weekend.
I'm sending you {{{big hugs}}}--please let us know how everything goes!

Andrew was a few days shy of 17 months when he had his scoping done...and because he ws always ill..he had to be intubated during the procedure..and had to get breathing treatments before we left...his procedure took a littel longer then most, but i am positive it was because he was undiagnosed and untreated for so long because his Ped wouldn't listen to me.
After all that Andrew was fine a few hours post...just a little hoarse.
I am sure everything will be fine...and you'll even be able togo to Cape Cod and enjoy yourselves...Good Luck and let us know how it all turns out:)

Catherine had hers done at 11 1/2 months and she came out of the anesthesia screaming her head off! This is NOT unusual behavior for her, lol. She was fine immediately thereafter. One of the things that helped her recover so quickly was not giving her Versed in the first place. For toddlers and older children, and sometimes for infants, a mild oral sedative called Versed will be administered to make the child less fearful of the anesthesia mask. However, it's truly not necessary in an infant because they conk out so fast, and giving it to them makes recovery that much longer.
Good luck!

I'm sure my reply is too late for you, but maybe it will help someone else...My dd had an endoscopy at 6 months old. We did not get to see her in the OR and she did not have Versed before going in. She just went with the nurse and next thing we knew the dr was out showing us pix. Then, they took us to the recovery room where she had already woken up and was screaming her head off and totally confused. She had to be intabated and had a sore throat. She was so upset, and it took her a couple hours to calm down before she would take a sip of apple juice so they could take out the iv and we could go home. She was very crabby the rest of the day. Next morning she was fine.
Then, at 2 yrs 4 mnths old she had another scope. It was a totally different experience. She was given Versed beforehand which made her "drunk". She was still talking and awake, but had no problem laying down in the bed with her bear and letting the nurse/anesthesiologist take her to the OR. Then the dr came and talked to us. About 15 minutes later they called us back to recovery. She was still asleep and we had a nurse stay with us until she woke up. She was not intabated this time and just had a little plastic thing in her mouth to keep her tongue down. The nurse took it out as soon as she started stirring. She woke up and didn't cry at all. She took juice immediately, got her iv out and we were out of the hospital 1 hour after she was finished with the scope. The only time she cried was on the way home because she liked the little tv they had for her while she was in bed at the hospital and wanted to go back. She was crabby for about 1 hour and then we got home and she relaxed. About 3 hours after the procedure she was back to being completely normal. Eating normal food and everything.
Hope this helps someone...
