View Full Version : normal night sleeping hours
atomikblonde 08-21-2006, 11:37 PM I was just curious - how many hours per night (even with interruptions) do your babies sleep per night? Titus is 3 1/2 months old and just doesn't seem to sleep more than 9 hours at the most during the night (even if it's not in a row). I thought babies at this age slept much longer than that. I know my daughter started sleeping from 7 to 7 sometime soon after 4 months, but I sheepishly don't really remember when that happened. Also, she wasn't a refluxer, so that experience might not be relevant. Any input? Should Titus be sleeping longer at night? I'm not sure how to encourage any more hours, but maybe we need to? Sometimes he makes those hours without waking, but more often he wakes up once to eat during that time. Makes for a short night for mom & dad. :)
Miori 08-21-2006, 11:44 PM Well, I would have loved to have a 9 hour stretch when Joshua was 3 mths old! He was an AWFUL sleeper for the longest time. By about 5mths, his reflux was under control and we were able to do some sleep training - we chose CIO b/c he's so stubborn, nothing else worked. Before that, he slept in our arms for several hours at a time, maybe 5-6 hrs in his bouncy chair or swing...
Does he really need the night feed or is that just a comfort thing? My Ped told me that once they reach 12lbs, they are just fine w/out the night feed.
sarahh 08-22-2006, 01:56 AM Okay.. my boys were almost 6 months old before they started to sleep through (11pm-5am). They have only just started sleeping 7pm-7am at 13 months. Every baby is different and unfortunately it seems to be the trend that a GERD baby has altered and interrupted sleeping patterns :-(
ZacsMom 08-22-2006, 07:15 AM At 3 1/2 months my son was going to bed "for the night" around 10pm and waking sometime around 1am and again around 4 or 5am and waking for the day around 7am. I think 9 hours is great.
Karas Mom 08-22-2006, 08:46 AM Kara is 7 1/2 months old and usually sleeps from 8 p.m.-6 a.m. or so. She has slept through the night for a few months and used to sleep for a bit longer at night (11-12 hrs). She still takes 2 naps during the day that total 3-3 1/2 hrs.
atomikblonde 08-22-2006, 07:33 PM ok, I think I'm understanding a little better. I keep thinking that I must be doing something wrong because Titus (even though he's definitely bigger than my daughter at that age) isn't doing the same thing. How many times must I fall into this trap before I understand???
I think he needs the night feed because he always sucks it down. My theory is that he stlll doen't get enough during the day to make it through the night. At his size, I would expect him to take a lot during a feeding, but he still is averaging about 4oz every 3 1/2 hours to 4 hours. I think this is because of the cereal added to the formula, but I could be wrong. And he goes right back to sleep. Also, his waking time at night varies widely, which tells me it's probably hunger rather than habitual. Does that make sense?
I just need to keep feeling grateful for the hours of sleep I'm getting and quit trying to "fix" him. It's hard though - I'm an analytical person, so I'm always trying to solve problems and he's a really challenging one!!! I'm on business travel right now, so I'm trying to take advantage of the hours of uninterrupted sleep for sure to recharge.
AvasMommy 08-22-2006, 08:18 PM 9 hours is awesome! :yahoo:
Total, w/ wakings, Ava probably sleeps btwn 6-8 hours total for the night, and naps for 1- 1 1/2 hours during the day. She just can't lay down for long enough to sleep more than that.
jlshank 08-22-2006, 10:41 PM I think 9 hours is really good! I have a few friends that have non-gerdlings and they don't even sleep that long. It sounds like he is doing great.
atomikblonde 08-22-2006, 11:16 PM hmmmmm. I just noticed Jennifer that Gariel takes 22.5mg of prevacid. Titus is almost 4 months. How heavy is Gariel? I'm going to call our GI as soon as I get back from this trip and ask about his recurrent symptoms and see if there's anything we can do. I didn't think an increase on the prevacid was possible, but maybe it is! That stuff is a freaking miracle!
You know, I know I should appreciate the short hours of sleep that I do get, but there's never been anything like th epast few months to make me feel every day of my almost 37 years. I've been wishing I did this 10 years ago - I probably would have bounced back a little easier. :) ah well.

Gabriel is about 16.5-17lbs. now. He is such a big boy. He is definitely a comfort feeder. What symptoms is he having besides waking up at night? I know what you mean, we have a completely different kid. I LOVE PREVACID!! If you can believe it, that little guy laughing in my sig, used to cry/scream 24/7. He is still a little moody, but I think he is just going to be a strong willed kid.
Aubrey get her last bottle at 8:00 am and usually is asleep, asleep and in her crib by 9:00 pm. She wakes anytime between 4:00 am (ugh, I hate those days) and 6:00 am. During the past couple of weeks, she woke up a couple of times at like 1:00 or 2:00 am, but I *think* it may have been a teeth thing (or reflux, who knows these days??:dontknow:
