View Full Version : This can't be reflux...can it?

Hi ladies

I could use some insight.....especially for those with a magic ball at home ....LOL

I don't know what is going on with Ava but she is no longer just cranky, but literally hanging and crying on me all day...I can't believe I referred to her as the 'perfect' baby
Last night she slept w/ out a peep from 6:00-6:45
Shortly after waking she was hanging on me, rubbing her eyes and nose...she looked exhausted/terrible
I tried to take the kids to the park, but had to come home because she literally wouldn't stop crying
We came home and she ate 3 chicken nuggets, fresh fruit, veggies, AND a an entire apple toaster pastry PLUS 5 ounces milk (mind you she literally ate non stop since she woke)
She then took a 1 hr 15min nap and woke SCREAMING
She has been napping better.. usually 2.5hrs
I got a feel in her mouth....she has 6 teeth....2 bottom and I think I felt a HUGE bulge on her bottom right (not next to the center 2, but towards the middle?)
I broke out the motrin and she was actually in a good mood the rest of the day...no eye/nose rubbing

I'm still wondering IF it's JUST teething...why the heck are my kids such AWFUL teethers?
Friends tell me they have a few bad days, NOT weeks
I feel like Zach was on motrin/tylenol most of his young life
Could this be reflux, considering the way she eats?
NO wet burps, arching, puke smell, trouble drinking or eating etc
Do u think it could be reflux even though she is sleeping through the night?
She was always a horrible sleeper, I think if she was in serious pain at night (gas/reflux) she would wake crying

Sooooooo.....what do I do?
It seems like she is getting worse and it is driving me crazy
Do you think I should keep everything as is, but give her motrin for teething?
OR try her on allergy meds like claritin OTC
I'm wondering if the motrin helped with teething or also allergy/sinus pain

She was fine around her 1 yr b-day in April
At that time she was on mylanta 2x per day and pepcid at night....she was also on alimentum...we did a gradual switch to whole milk and she seemed fine
She actually started sleeping better when we stopped pepcid at night

I'm totally confused and DH is of NO help....Grrrrr
Thanks for reading!!

Could be teething or it also sounds like a growth spurt. This is how my kids would get during growth spurts. Maybe she is coming down with something. Either way, I hope you figure it out and she feels better soon! Oh, and of course, it definitely could be reflux as well

Thanks Erin

Boy, I wish there was a better when then the ph probe to determine reflux
Considering she is sleeping through the night, and clearly doesn't have a weight issue (over 25+pounds)
I hate to put her through that

I second everything Erin just said...I'm no help at all, sorry! Sounds like what Ava has been doing lately too, but I know hers is reflux: major hiccups that turn into puke, wet burps, screaming, not eating/drinking. I was glad to be at work today, then I felt guilty and cried, and then when I got home, she was a big reflux mess and a total clingon! I want my happy baby back!

I hope it's just a big tooth coming in, and she's not getting sick or having a reflux flare. Hope tomorrow is a better day!

I wish there was a better way too! It is so frustrating, especially when dealing with issues like you are dealing with, you just don't know what is going on!

I remember just not knowing and deciding something different was wrong with him everyday, when all along I was just in denial because it was the stupid reflux! So, frustrating.

Thanks again Erin and Lindsay
This is so frustrating because I don't want her (and us) to be miserable, but don't want her medicated if she doesn't need it
I have no problem giving her meds if she needs them and they are going to help
I guess I just need to figure out if we should TRY reflux meds or allergy meds
I'm leaning towards allergy meds since I don't see ANY signs of reflux....
If i did, she would be on reflux meds asap!

Thanks again for letting me talk throug it

Didn't you say you gave her tylenol/Advil or something like that and she felt better? I think you did LOL if I remember right. If so, and she did feel better than maybe just try that and see how it goes and lean more toward it being something temporary. Or, you could always try some mylanta and see if that temporarily relieves discomfort... Sigh, I know all that is easier said than done, and not black and white.

Thanks Erin

YES, today I have her motrin and she did much much better
I am just wondering if the motrin helped with teething pain or allergy related pain
I also tried mylanta when she was like this in the past and it never helped at all

Teething really really aggravates reflux, which is maybe why she is rubbing her nose. But if the painkillers help, I think it is more something other than reflux. Did she get a vaccine lately. I am in a reflux nightmare here since her last vaccine- for us it starts two days post and lasts over 3 weeks

Hi JoJo

No, she goes for her check up in 2 weeks
When Ava was a baby I clearly remember how bad she got after shots...reflux nightmare!
She was up lat night crying from 3-4am...I gave her motrin this am and she seems OK...so far

Hi Kim....
Just got your pm too. So I'll respond to both here.....I am thinking it sounds more like teething, especially if she responds to the Motrin. Jackson has bad days/weeks with teething. Some babies just have a harder time then others.

Now as far as the allergies go, you said you she was rubbing her eyes/nose but stopped when you gave her the motrin?? For Jackson and he has been on allergy meds since he was about 8 months his big sign was the big puffy eyes and really really congested like "snore louder then dad" congested. I know every kiddo can be different though.

How is Zachary doing with his allergies?? We just changed from Clairnex to Zytrec and I think it helps a little more then the Clairnex. We also started Nasonex at the time same time so it could be that helping him more too. Do you guys see a pedi allergist?? Have you ever done any allergy testing?? My pedi still tells me it is too early to label him with "allergies" so his charts say chronic congestion.....She said next year we will have to see how he does before I'll call it allergies. Unfortunately with the eyes and nose it pretty obvious....but we can hope.

Hope Ava has a better day for you!! How many teeth does she have?? Jackson has 4 bottom and 4 top and is working on his first molars and has been for sometime, but no signs of them popping though yet.

My daughter didn't have weeks of teething pain, but she did have solid days of misery. What you're describing definitely sounds like teething or allergies and not reflux (to me anyway). I don't think motrin would help with allergy pain - at least it never touches mine. With swollen sinuses, usually only an anti-histimine will help. When Liana was teething, I would (at the danger of medicating when she didn't necessarily need it) try to keep ahead of the pain and go ahead and give it to her every 6 hours for a few days running. It seemed to help a lot. Then I'd stop it and see if things were better.

Another option is go to the pediatrician and ask if they think she's teething badly. They can take a look up her nose and see if things look swollen or if she might have a sinus infection. My pediatrician was always a lot more successful getting her fingers into my daughter's mouth than I was. :)

hope that helps a little.................good luck!

Thanks Anna and Meagan

I guess it's 'just teething'
I gave her motrin first thing this am and we were at the par for 2 hrs...she was a little clingy but not nearly as bad as yesterday
She was also up for 1 hr last night crying, so hopefully it will come through soon

Zach is doing Ok with his allergies
Yes, we see a ped allergist
he recently had RAST testing and only 3 environmental factors and rye he reacted to, but not enough to be classified as an allergy
I'm annoyed because I asked the ped allergist about trying zyrtec instead of clarinex but he said the med switch wouldn't make a difference
I think I'll call and push to at least give it a try

Thanks again for your feedback~!

Aubrey gets really clingy as well when she is (or still is) teething. We already have two teeth through!
