Hi all-
Sarah has been off all meds for two days now for her scope in two weeks. SO far her only symptom has been decreasing the amount she eats. She has cut back by about half of what she normally eats and drinks. I have noticed in the past that when she needs a med increase this is her symptom- she starts reducing the amount she eats and once we increase her medicine she improves. Could this be her only symptom of reflux- feeding refusal? Otherwise she seems completely fine. She is spitting out her solids now and reduced the number of ounces she drinks. Do you think this is reflux related or something else going on? It doesn't seems like to me it is just coincedence(sp) that she reduces her intake two days after stopping her medicine.

It could very well be that her only symptom will be reduced intake. I'm sure she's getting uncomfortable off meds, but I'd be willing to bet that if you were to keep her off meds for an extended period of time, she'd start to show other symptoms, too.

As far as spitting out solids, I'd also be willing to bet that this is due to reflux discomfort. Bethany did the same things--she'd spit out the food or just turn her head/scream. Similarly, when off meds (when her silly mother forgot to call in the refill!), she'd be fairly okay for a day or so, but would decrease the intake. The meds made no difference in taking baby food. :-(

when kids get older they tend to hide their symptoms better. It took us a while to put Evan back on his meds after we stopped them b/c we didn't put his feeding refusal together w/ his reflux b/c that's all he was doing. We started on his meds again and now he eats much better. Why are they stopping her meds for her scope? We never had to do that.

Jennifer--(sorry to hijack the thread!) we, also, were not instructed to take B off her meds for her scope. I wonder if we should have, though, as there was very little damage present (a good thing, as it showed the meds were working); however, when we had to switch GIs due to insurance issues, the second GI laughed in our faces and said that a clean scope = no GERD.

In our case, I wish B had been off meds so that we could see the extent of the problem.

I think opinions are divided about meds vs. no meds when doing the scope.

I feel the same way. Keegan's scope was clean and it seems like now since that came back it's even harder to get the GI to take us seriously and help. We saw our PED. on Saturday and he said a clean scope doesn't mean a baby doesn't have reflux, it just means the medication is preventing damage. But it's not enough/or the right kind to make the baby comfortable. He definitely thinks Keegan has silent reflux. Today we are contacting the GI office to see if we can speak to the head of the clinic to try and someone to be more aggressive in treating Keegan. I don't want my baby all doped up on meds, but I want him to be comfortable!

Unfortunately, Karie, I doubt its any coincidence. I hope the two weeks flies by and she doesn't feel any worse. Noah was left on meds for his scope , and now, the rest of his doctors are so frustrated that they really don't know what it showed. Anyways, I'm glad your GI is doing things right, and I hope the scope is beneficial and can help with the treatment of Sarah's reflux.

thanks - we will see how it goes. I don't want her to be in pain and make her feeding refusal even worse. It has only been two days so we will see. I want the scope to be as useful as possible but I also don't want her to be in pain. I am so scared about the scope sincce they have to sedate her. I am worried she won't eat anything afterwards becuase her throat hurts. We will take it day by day without the meds but if her feeding gets really bad I think I will have to restart them. It has already been 6 weeks without weight gain.

Karie, Noah has been put under four times, its really not that bad. I'm not going to lie about the anxiety issue on *my* end, but he has always handled it so well. After a long nap after the anesthesia, he bounces right back. His eating was always a bit sketchy for a day after, but then he was fine.

Evan was just put under today and this was worse than when he had his scope (he had his adenoids out today) and he's taken 3 bottles so far 1/2 strength. It's not much, but it's something and right now he's playing w/ AJ so he's doing well. They gave him Tylenol w/ codeine this time, but not in the past. He's never had a problem losing weight after he's been out under (this was #3).

We were never instructed to take him off his meds, but I wish someone had told me to take him off his Neocate and take myself off the TED I was doing while nursing. He too showed no real damage, but duh, even if there had been some, the Neocate and meds would've fixed it.
