View Full Version : Has anyone tried chiropractic for reflux...
Liam's Mommy 08-02-2006, 08:34 AM Just curious, although I know some people would never go, those that have tried the natural route, have you tried chiropractic for your gerdling? I go myself when I can because I have major back problems, scoliosis and a herniated disc. It does work wonders for me when I can find the time and energy to go. My chiropractor seems to think he can address Liam's reflux issue through chiropractic.
Katey 08-02-2006, 08:58 AM I have read that a lot of people have had success with it. I was tempted to give it a try, but dh was dead set against it. He was worried that they might mess somthing up.
If you decided to give it a try let us know how it works out.
Charla 08-02-2006, 09:31 AM John and I have a friend who is a chriopractor and he said that it would help, althought we never did anything with Rachel. He did show us some simple things we could do at home. My grandmother also gave me an article about a little boy who was diagnosed with failure to thrive, so the parents took them to their chriopractor because they felt they had nothing to lose because the doctors sent them home. The doctor made an adjustment on his neck and within 12 hours the baby had made a complete turn around. Turns out the mom had a very difficult delivery and they had to use forceps to get the baby out which may have hurt him. I know that this story doesn't have anything to do with reflux, but it really makes you wonder sometimes.
Eliana's Mommy 08-02-2006, 09:51 AM Eliana used to projectile vomit 3-4 times a day and never went more then 3 days without vomiting. After her first visit to the chiro she had been vomit free for 20 something days (first time ever). Occassionally we have an incident but usually at night and when she has consumed too much dairy in one day (excessive phlem). She will be 21 months on the 14th of this month. Her first chiro appt. was May 22nd.
Liam's Mommy 08-02-2006, 10:41 AM Thanks for all your replies. I'm leaning towards bringing him in and giving it a try. Thanks for your experience and stories Eliana's mommy and Charla. It does work for me as I said, but I still have a hard time handing my baby over to be adjusted, although I do trust my chiropractor. Kind of strange that I feel that way since I'm willing to dose him up with medication (zantac(which apparently contains alcohol)\gas drops\infant tylenol) and my chiropractor wants to address this from a natural med-free approach. He's very anti-meds and doesn't hide that fact. I guess the whole cracking, adjusting of spinal parts is a bit scary to me, but dosing him up with meds isn't as scary for some reason....hmmmmm..I think I need to ponder that thought...
I'm taking him to a GI specialist for the 1st time August 8th. Thanks for reading...
Noah's Mom 08-02-2006, 10:52 AM I want to start by saying that I have nothing against the idea of natural medicine or trying to go med-free, but I wanted to share a quick bit of information.
My stepfather went to see a chiropractor a few years ago for a pain in his neck. This chiropractor is a well respected doctor and had been practicing in this area for years. The doctor made one adjustment, and my stepdad had a stroke on the table. He nearly died. Fortunately, he is fine today, but it is a reminder that chiropractors are not medical doctors, and adjustments *can* be dangerous. I do understand that they are beneficial for many, but I thought this piece of information was important for you to know!
Eliana's Mommy 08-02-2006, 10:57 AM Eliana's chiro doesn't do adjustments on her. She does more of accupuncture (for reflux) and laser treatments (crossing eye). She goes once a week for these.
MomOf4Monkeys 08-02-2006, 02:28 PM I was in the "I'll try anything" state of mind and I took Daniel to a chiro at 4 months. We went 3 times and the third time the chiro told us everything was perfect and there wasn't anything else he could do. It didn't make any difference at all for Daniel. But, the reason I tried it was because I'd heard of it helping other babies, so i thought it was worth a shot.
Good luck.
Moonbmr72 08-02-2006, 05:38 PM We did it with Payton. He definately had something "stuck" along his spine. Also his hips.
I think it was working a bit as far as his comfort level, but we dropped off with the treatments as we ended up in the hospital a lot and quite frankly, I forgot to keep going.
I think I will take him back for a check up to see if he's all aligned, though.
Shaes Grammy 08-02-2006, 06:28 PM I am not too computer smart, but I know there were a few different threads about the chiro, some for, some against obviously everyone has their own view.
I am sure, Maggie knows what I am talking about. Maybe she knows how to find those old threads?
Anyone else able to post a link to those old posts? P.S. Maybe you could give me some instructions so I could do it myself next time. Thanks
Best wishes with whatever your decision is.

atomikblonde 08-04-2006, 10:44 PM I've heard of the chiro thing and have been tempted myself, especially before we had a good diagnosis and the meds kicked in. I would have done anything to keep Titus from screaming 24/7. He's doing pretty well now, but I still think it might have helped before because we could never put him on the floor. We were either holding him or he was in his car seat. Every time I got him out he'd stretch over and over like he'd been tied up or something. I felt like he was really needing to work his limbs and get things stretched out but we couldn't because it made him so miserable. good luck!
HezBucks 08-04-2006, 10:59 PM Anna goes to the chiro every other week. She started out 5 days in a row, then once a week for four weeks. It really helps her. If she has a tough day, I take her in and she usually sleeps for a couple of hours after and wakes up doing well. And she is still on meds. Our chiro doesnt push us either way. He can tell when he feels her what has been going on with her, like he will say...has she been really gassy? Etc, and he always is right on. As far as adjusting, he doesnt adjust her the way he would an adult. He holds her up to his chest, and uses his pinkys to do an adjustment. the other is with her lying on my lap. Make sure if you take your baby in there are very experienced with pediatric chiropractic.
