I haven't been able to post or write for a couple of days now. Been extremely busy at work and home.

Gabe had an endoscopy and PH probe done last week. He was so extremely fussy, that his GI wanted to make sure it wasn't something else causing it.

The endoscopy and the biopsies showed that everything is normal. He has no damage from his reflux and all of the biopsies came back normal.

The PH probe showed that he doesn't have severe reflux (a normal person's PH levels are between 5-7), Gabe's PH levels were generally around 4.8.

It was very interesting to see when he was refluxing, sometimes his levels would drop in the 1's and 2's. What was funny, most of the time when he was fussy, his levels were fine, in the 6 or 7's. The doctor says that I just have a high needs baby. I guess that is a nice way of telling me I have a spoiled baby on my hands. :-)

It definitely makes me feel better to know that a lot of his fussiness is not due to pain anymore. I can deal with him being fussy, I know he'll out grow that, I can't deal with him being in pain.

I'm glad all of the tests came back normal.

Your post is very encouraging to us as maiya will be getting both procedures soon, and i am very upset.

How does a ph probe work with an active toddler. Maiya handled it well as a babe, but i know she will want to pull it out now.

Can you share your endo experience with us. i dont want to be overly dramatical, but my husband and i are petrified of the procedure and the outcome

Glad the tests were all Ok. Did you take him off his meds for the probe?

Sorry this might be kind of long.

I know exactly what you mean, I was very upset too. I cried so... much the few days before his procedure date, I think my boss must have thought I was crazy. I couldn't help it, every time I thought about having that wire go through his noes and down his poor little throat, I would get choked up and start crying.

Don't worry, it definitely was not as bad as I had imagined. Gabe is already very moody, I thought he was going to cry all day, but suprisingly he didn't. He did cry quite a bit when they put it in, it made him gag a lot, but after that he was fine. Are they going to sedate Maiya? They didn't sedate Gabe since he is so young.

I don't know how it will be for Maiya since she is a toddler (Gabe is only 3 1/2 months old), but I'm sure it will be ok. Now that Gabe can grab things, and most of the time has his hands near his face, I thought for sure he was going to pull it out too. To make sure he didn't pull it out we put heavy socks on his hands and the GI nurse medically taped them to his hands. He really doesn't like his hands confined, but that is the only way I could ensure it would stay in. All day he kept trying to pull it out and rubbing his face, but the socks helped tremendously (he couldn't grab at it). I also kept a close eye on him throughout the day to make sure he didn't get at it. The doctor said as long as I could keep the probe in for at least 6 hours, it would be sufficient enough to get the results. At night we put him in our room in case he woke up and tried to pull it out. I woke up a couple of times throughout the night to make sure it was still in.

Since Miaya is a little older, I would suggest trying to keep her occupied during the day. Play with her a lot, so it will keep her mind off of the wires in her nose. I am not sure since she is a toddler that the sock thing would work for her, but it's worth a try. If nothing else for those first six hours keep an eye on her every second so that she doesn't pull it out.

Is Miaya going to be medicated while the probe is in?

Gabe was medicated while it was in. His GI doctor wanted to see if he was still refluxing while being medicated. He even had us give him apple juice (which really made his PH levels drop) to see how he would react to the acids.

At what age did she have it done when she was a baby? What were the results then?

I am sure Miaya will do just fine. I sure hope that the results come back good. Please let me know what you find out.

By the way, she is such a cutie! You and your husband are blessed with an adorable little girl.

My 13 week old, Ethan, is going to have an Upper GI. What is involved in that? Also, we went to the specialist yesterday, they took him of of reglan and zantax and put him on the prevacid solutabs(half a day). They have me dissolving it into water then feeding it to him thru a surynge...can't I just give it to him in pill form? He takes the homeopathic solutabs Does anyone have experience with this??? Please let me know. On a happy note...for the past 2 nights Ethan has only been up one time per night, at 2:30am, both times. Could this be the beginning of sleeping thru the night? keep your fingers crossed for us!!

When I had took Keegan for his upper GI it wasn't a big deal. My little guy is such a flirt that all he did was smile at everyone. They put him on the x-ray table and did some pictures, then they had him drink some barium while scanning some more. The only time he got upset is when they took the barium away, it's was very sweet and he hadn't eaten for 6 hours so he finally decided he was hungry at that time. The hard part was they had to hold him down to keep him still during the scan and toward the end that upset him just a little. We got the results the next day from our ped. and they showed nothing.

We use the Prevacid compound but I don't think you can administer any tablet/capsule med to an infant, they would probably choke. I want to try these solutabs everyone is talking abou though since I have heard the compound loses it's potency after a week or so.

Yep, you can definetly just put the tab in his cheek and let it disolve.

Hi Jennifer

Thanks for your reply. How was the endo

We had the probe done when she was 6 months old. She refluxed 219 times in 24 hours- sometimes lasting as long as 19 minutes. They classified it as severe. This time, it will be on meds. I just dont know how i will run around with her with the wire and the console

|I am more worried about the endo.

when do you get your results

Jennifer, that is great that you have a little peace now that Gabe is not suffering. If he is fussing but not in pain, then it is not so bad.

Stephanie....too funny, that Keegan was upset when they took the barium away! That was Roni's big fear when Shae-Lynne needed her upper GI, how they heck would they get her to take the barium (she doesn't eat)

best wishes

The endo wasn't too bad, the PH probe was worse since he had to keep it in all day. I think the worst part for Gabe was having to be held down to get it in (he HATES to be confined). His GI was able to get it in within seconds. It goes in and comes out the same way the PH probe does. He put it through Gabes nose, which made him gag and cry a little, and once Gabe started to swallow it went right down. The GI took a couple of pictures and biopsies, and it was all over in about 10 minutes. I am sure Maiya will do just fine. :-)

I didn't know they could tell you how many times they refluxed throughout the day. The GI never said anything about that, I guess I should ask. His nurse did tell me that he was refluxing throughout the day but that it was not severe and his meds were keeping it under control. I am glad that you don't have to take her off of her medications. When you took her off her meds last time, is it like starting all over again once you put her back on them? I know we had to wait 2 weeks when we first started his meds.

Why are they doing the endo and the PH probe? Is she in pain or do they want to just see how her meds are working? I sure hope that the results of her PH probe show that she is doing much better now. I can't even begin to imagine refluxing 219 times a day.
