View Full Version : No Tests ever
Debbie 07-27-2006, 09:47 PM Hey guys:hello2:
Stephanie has been in contact with Jaydens GI/NP a few times this week concerning Jaydens reflux flare ups. Jayden has been on 7.5 mg 2x per day for about 1 1/2 months, he was doing very well until the trial weaning, as I have posted before he has been very uncomfortalbe, meals are arching again, coughs while he eats, coughs when he not eating...and you know what kind of cough I'm talking about, the reflux cough....he just keeps spitting up more and more, always wants to be held and does that squeez and draws up his legs,,,everyone thinks it's cute but it's acctuallyhim dealing with his pain...anyhow the NP told Steph to increase hi Previcid to 3/4 of a capsul 2x per day....OMG and how the **** do you measure that????? If this doesn't work she's going toconcider switching him to Prilosec...... Back to my title now...LOL This baby has never had any kind of testing, I don't want him to have anything done to him if it doesn't need be, but it seems that everyone of your childer have had some kind of tests done....Is it not needed because we know from his symptoms that it's GERD? I don't know, We are waiting for him to get better with age and he is getting worse....Steph trial weaned on 7-10 and he was back on his reg dose by 7-13 todays is 2 full weeks of full dose but he is still worse....Steph is getting upset about changing meds/ as her SIL told her he would become dependant, and is getiing very frustrated with a sick baby again....What can we do? Has anyone elses kids gotten worse at this age?
Debbie 07-27-2006, 09:50 PM Sorry about all the typos...LOL
AvasMommy 07-27-2006, 09:55 PM Absolutely Debbie! Just like Jayden, Ava got worse right around 8-9 months, and it's been downhill for her ever since, unfortunately! We really had high hopes that she was going to outgrow it by a year, like they told us she would, but that looks like a slimmer possibility every day. We just went thru another round of testing in early June, and it didn't tell us anything we didn't already know. Although it's not too awful for the babes, it was really hard on dh and I, me especially b/c I just have such a hard time dealing w/ seeing her in pain. We're playing musical chairs w/ the meds right now too, and nothing seems to be working for us. I hope they give you guys some answers, but if they do decide testing is necessary, maybe it will help straighten things out a little better? Good luck!

First of all, I would have Stephanie call the pharmacy or doctor and request to change to Prevecid Solutabs. They are easily broken. I gave Noah 3/4 pill twice per day for months, and it was so simple to break them in 1/4's and give three at a time.
Also, I would not push for any testing quite yet. I would give this new dose a week or two and then re-evaluate. If he is still doing all of those nasty reflux things, then I might think about having him scoped just to make sure there isn't any inflammation that could be causing extra pain.
Although I know how tempting it would be to try to wean, I would not even attempt it for at least another 6 months. I just think its better to be safe than sorry with this. The reduced dose could have aggrevated his tummy, and perhaps he is just trying to recover from that.
I really hope Jayden is feeling well again soon, Debbie. Keep us posted! Don't forget to request solutabs! That will make Steph's life much easier!

Don't you think the GI would have thought of that, she said make sure he gets all his beeds...geesh! What count them.???LOL I'll tell Steph about the solutabs!
I don't even know what the tests would prove or disprove? It's just getting to the point where he is uncomfortable most of the time and we just wonder why. Steph even had to elevate his bed again. And the weaning was the GI'sidea ...not us. Just so frustrating to watch again, I read about Ava spitting up hot dog hours after eating ...yup Jayden is doing that again too, hours after eating, here it comes. and remember the real watery vomit he's doing that again too.... I hate this....it makes me very sad.
Mirra 07-27-2006, 10:31 PM Debbie, can I hijack your thread a second....
the reflux cough
Can someone describe the reflux cough? Masion has never coughed and amongst his grumpiness lately has emerged some major coughing and grunting....quite honestly it looks to me as if Mason has just leanred how to make new sounds. But now you have me wondering....
Debbie 07-27-2006, 10:37 PM LOL .....
It's hard to explain, but I'll try and maybe someone else will have a better explination ???
I would say it's kind like the cough you as an adult might get before your going to vomit....It's like a forcing air gag like cough..????? There no substance to it.
ConnorsMommy 07-28-2006, 01:03 AM Oh Debbie, I don't know! Connor's reflux has gotten worse as he's gotten older. He got his Nexium this am and I normally give him Zantac at 12 noon and it was such a crazy day with running around I missed a dose. The poor kid was coughing and gagging and pulling at his tongue. It was horrible. I was so hoping he'd grow out of this soon but it doesn't look that way! I would think that Jayden needs to be on 30mg of Prevacid??? Connor just saw the GI a few weeks ago and she gave us a script for 30mg (capsules) How much does Jayden weigh? Connor was 18 pounds 4 oz at the appt.
Sam's Mom 07-28-2006, 07:50 AM Ditto what Maggie said. He will not become "dependant" on the medication--there is plenty of proof on IRD of kiddos who have been weaned--when the time was right. All gerdlings who outgrow it do it at there own pace. Give the med increase some time--hang in there! Give Steph big hugs from IRD!
ZacsMom 07-28-2006, 07:54 AM Debbie,
Just wanted to say that Zac had never had ANY kind of invasive or non-invasive testing for his reflux. We went purely by symptoms that were pretty obvious. The ped DID recommend an upper GI when he was 2 months old, but dh wanted NOTHING to do with that, I disagreed but we decided to wait until he was a bit older and it was never brought up again . :dontknow: I agree about the solutabs, they're easy to break apart w/your fingers into halves or quarters and then you just let him suck on it and rinse with a little sip of water. Ta-da!
Minnie 07-28-2006, 09:27 AM Eric didn't have any testing until 20 months. The testing started because we all felt there was something more going on than GERD. Now his testing is all done, and we are back to treating his reflux the same way we were before we even met the GI. I'm kinda sitting here thinking "Why did we just do all that?"
Deciding to test is a tough one, but I'm sure Steph will choose what she thinks is best for him.
As far as getting worse at his age. Yes, Eric's reflux was going pretty strong during this time, but he was eating more, and was way more active than ever before. Things did calm down a little by the year mark, and we began to see more good days than bad around that time.
The whole ride is full of ups and downs as they grow and change and eat different foods. It's so hard.
(((BIG HUG)))
Debbie 07-28-2006, 10:17 AM Kim , Jayden weighed 22 lbs at his WIC appt on Wed and he is 27" tall. I thought the increase was very minimal??? She(GI) really keeps things on the low end ...which is good except it takes a long time to get to get the right dose that way, and he suffers until then...KWIM
I'm glad to read that this is not abnormal, just the reflux roller coaster...BS! I am also glad that the tests are not something he should be having, and that Zac did without them makes me feel better and that unfortunatley Minnie you feel Erics didn't accomplish much...that is reasureing to me that he doesn't need them at least not right now.
Thanks everyone for lowering my stress level once again...I will pass it along to Stephanie.
kimber 07-28-2006, 01:03 PM Hi
My ds will be 3 in October and his only test was an Upper GI at 5 mnths (which showed him refluxing but NO abnormalities)
I'm NOT a big fan of testing....everyone has their own opinion but I know so so so many kids that have gone through testing just to end up back where they started with NO answers
Kids that had endos and were told they were NOT allergist to dairy/soy etc but they clearly react
I think if a child is suffering and in pain (even on meds) or has a weight issue...testing should be considered....but it doesn't always provide that magical answer were looking for
Hope that made sense :)
Debbie 07-28-2006, 03:53 PM Hope that made sense :icon_smi:
It made perfect sense!
I am really glad that I asked, cause we were kinda feeling like the tests were so important. But really they are just confirmation tests...we don't need that.
We know he has reflux, We didn't know if the tests would show the severity or degree......He just needs his meds adjusted to his level of reflux right now.....We didn't want testing...we just wanted to be sure he was getting everything that he needs to be well. KWIM
