View Full Version : Little quirks
I am not sure if this is the right forum for this thread, but I thought it would be interesting to post and see the little quirks that our gerdlings do.
My Ava does this thumping, lifts both legs up and brings them down with force before she falls asleep. She also rubs her face really hard before she goes to sleep.
One more thing - when she is on her back and gets excited she hits her tummy with one of the fists.
Anyone???:razzing:
Leigh 07-16-2006, 11:12 PM Hi Ella!
Part of it is likely her immature nervous system and her needing to learn to control it (for the hitting of the tummy I would guess). All my boys did the banging of the feet on the crib or floor, etc. and I believe it is a stage they go through, particularly while you are trying to change that dirty diaper! lol Correct me if I am wrong but she is 6 months old, right?
The rubbing of the face really hard is a bit concerning as it sounds like as sensory issue to me, yet I do know of some kiddos of friends who say their kids did this and were fine. Does she get red marks or such when she does this?
I am hauling this thread over to the sensory issues forum though as you may gain more replies there. :)
She is 5 moths, and yes there are red marks left on her cheeks by her eyes. Sometimes I see her scratching those spots with her nails even. I don't know what to think. They look like eczema spots, but she should not have any eczema anymore, since she' s been on Neocate.
I wonder what it may be.
She also does this funny thing that my son did when he was a lot a lot younger.
When she gets either excited or mad or unsure her hands shake. Especially when she cries. Is that normal?????
brookesmum 07-17-2006, 09:32 AM My Brooke does the hittong of fists on to her tummy when she gets excited...lol....I tell her she is beating herself up.
Brooke also rubs her face constantly while going to sleep....and she pulls her paci out, then cries instantly for it back.
Another thing Brooke has been doing for about 6 weeks now is when she is laying on her back, even when in her bouncy she raises her head up...very high off of the ground or seat or whatever and looks around, she does it all the time...like she wants to sit up!
If we walk past her bedroom door when she is going to sleep, you see this head lift up to see who is there...cracks me up ROFL....she laughs at us, she is just to darn cute and cheeky :)
Brooke also likes to bend her mouth down on to her chest, trying to eat her bib or top....and she is never without something in her mouth, if not a bottle, or paci, then it is her hands, they are in there 24/7.
Seems my Brooke and your Ava are 2 days apart...so they would be about on par.
Does Ava like tummy time? Can she roll yet?
Brooke hates tummy time, she has rolled from her tummy to her back (in anger) but she is showing no signs of going the other way, or even wanting to roll on to her side....I think its from not having much flat floor time.
I will add her other quirks as they come to mind, as she has a few...lol.
Kimberly, this is amazing. This board and the answers you get from other moms with kids doing same things. It just makes me feel so much better.
Ava and Brooke sound so much alike and they look a lot alike too. The hairline and the dead giveaway.
Ava just started doing this head lift thing like Brooke. She does not roll over yet, but has found her feet and when she grabs them, she tends to roll to her side (not fully yet). I guess, she is not far away. She's also working on her sittin up. If you place her on the bed, so she is not on a flat surface, she'll sit like a tripod for as long as 3 minutes at a time. But won't sit up straight. She also does the head forward to chew up her bib or whatever she is wearing.
Sometimes she even sticks her tongue out, so she can reach the bib.
Always has something in her mouth, like you said 24/7, I suspect, since she's found her feet, next she'll stick them in her mouth.
She is not on the skinny side, tubby baby. At 5 months appointment she weighed at 17.4lbs. How big or little is your Brooke???
Ava grunts quite a bit as well. Sometimes when I feed her, she would straighten her legs up and grunt as if something is not right, but then stop.
This reflux does not stop to amaze me. i am trying not to chuck everything up to reflux, I mean the quirks, but its not easy.

Samuels mom 07-17-2006, 10:34 PM Sam also used to thomp his legs when he went to sleep in his crib - I chalked it up to him liking the sound on the mattress?? Guess I never thought more into it. He also rubs his face a lot with his blanket and leaves marks still and he is 16 months old.
He also has a weird quirk of pulling his hair when he is tired. It is so weird - he even pulls mine if it is in reach of him. He moans and pulls his hair. Weird thing, but he has always done this. My mom says he is singing himself to sleep.
menfusse 07-17-2006, 11:11 PM Em does all of the above..lol. Well, she doesn't kick the matress anymore, but she used to. She also used to scratch the sheets as she fell asleep rubbing her face with her blankie until it was red and sings herself to sleep...when she isn't busy fighting it! She also use to do yank her own paci too, but now she has that figured out...even gets in in by herself...YAY!
Mirra 07-17-2006, 11:20 PM Yup...add Mason to the list, he does all of it as well. I even posted a couple weeks ago about hearing nothing but "whomp, whomp, whomp" through the nite with him slamming his legs down in the crib. We moved him to his own room, lol.
Kimberly...mason is the exact same with the rolling over and will be 6 months in t6 days. It keeps freakign me out. He can do it on accident but not on purpose. He doesn;t like tummy time much either and I have done it once a day. ~shrugs~ i dunno bout that kid, lol.
Samuels mom 07-18-2006, 04:47 PM Any one else's monkey's pull their hair or is Sam a weirdo??
ZacsMom 07-18-2006, 05:00 PM Any one else's monkey's pull their hair or is Sam a weirdo??
LoL Zac doesn't pull his hair, but when he's mad, he does this thing w/his arms where it's kindof like...well he folds his arms and squeezes him self and then starts brushing/petting each earm w/his hand (agressively)...if that makes sense, switching from one arm to the other.
Shaes Grammy 07-18-2006, 05:23 PM Sarah, when my nephew was a baby and my mom would rock him he played with her hair as he fell asleep. He always held onto it twirling it in his fingers, too cute. But I wouldn't call it pulling?
Samuels mom 07-18-2006, 10:26 PM He pulls his own hair - it is really weird. It started at rubbing his head and it has escalated to pulling his hair. He pulls mine only when he is trying to sleep if it is near his reach otherwise he pulls his hair.
brookesmum 07-19-2006, 06:35 AM Brooke weighs, as of yesterday 17lb's so she is not skinny either...lol.
Another thing she does is, when I do put her on her tummy......apart from screaming blue murder, she puts her arms straight out to her sides, like she is a bird...and kind of balances like a rolly polly toy on her belly.....her feet are off the ground, so is her head and her arms...too funny.....
She can pull her legs up under her, she is very strong in her legs, like she could crawl, but her arms are not strong.......she doesn't push herself up at all....just cries and dribbles into the blanket.
I know this is from being nursed for the last 5 months, as floor time has been nearly non-existant due to her reflux pain...and now I believe her motorskills are going to be behind :(
Now that her pain and reflux seems to be doing so much better (touch wood) I am giving her a lot more floor time, and tummy time 3 times a day, for as long as she can handle it.
Lindasmom 07-21-2006, 02:27 PM Had to reply, she sounds just like Linda-Marie, she rubs her face quite hard when shes tired, sometimes will knock her pacifier out then look for it, that or just pop it out herself then put it back in. And I think shes part rabbit, she will thump her legs up and down, either when shes excited or just because. Not cute however when I'm giving her a bath, wind up getting a little shower!
Debbie 01-27-2007, 11:18 PM I found this interesting and wondered if any of the moms who responded have any more concerns now that 7 months have past.....i am starting to wonder about Jayden..tippy toe walking, biting himself to the point of leaving marks, if he accidentally bangs his head, he will keep doing it..also he has become obsessed with watching "his movies" has fits until you put it in for him...runs to the tv when we get home before his coat is even off to watch the tv.....crying till you put his movie in and then does not move until it's over.
Hi Debbie - my ds used to bite his hand on a daily basis when he was excited or mad ie didn't get his way. He started doing it around 10 months of age and stopped around 2 yrs (I know a long time to be biting himself as my dh and I were freaked out )He would bang his head on the floor and that lasted for months too.We actually called a child psychologist we were so worried. He was also VERY late to talk. He did not even say mama or dada til approx 24 months- he is now 3.5 yrs and and does NOT stop talking LOL and has a great vocabulary. He was also obsessed with baby einstien and wiggles. Would cry until we put it on would cry when it was over. Looks like Jayden and Remington have a lot of very similar qualities and so far my ds is a "normal" little boy. Good luck I know how worrying it can be.

Don't know if this helps or not but my kids were major feet thumpers in their cribs when they were going to sleep for a long time. I don't know, it must have helped them settle down or something. They only do it a little bit now, usually they stand up and babble to each other till someone drops down and passes out now. But our family room is right beneath their bedroom and occasionally you can hear the "whomp, whomp, whomp" of their feet hitting the mattress.
Dylan clenches his fists, scrunches his noses, and squints his eyes (or they look like they are going to pop out)when he gets very excited or frustrated. I have always thought it was just a Dylan thing and laughed cause I think it's cute. He definitely is the "quirkier" of the too, he has some funny mannerisms but nothing that I worry about, it just is "Dylan" to me. He is pretty on track as far as social/physical development so I don't worry about those quirks. They make him who he is.
As far as the not rolling/sitting up thing, I would mention to your ped. but since Bonnie commented on this too and both of your kiddos are little roly-poly's I wonder if that doesn't have something to do with it. I notice that Keegan is steadier on his feet than Dylan, and Dylan is the chubbier of the two. I think that sometimes the roly-poliness slows him down in some regards because it's harder for him to balance it all. I could be totally wrong though.
Anyway, I don't think any of the things you are mentioning are too worrisome, a lot of them sound like just little quirks that all our kiddos have. If you are worried about anything more developmentally you can always ask your ped. for a referral to a OT for an eval. I did that w/Keegan at 4 mos. b/c he wasn't holding his head up really well yet and that really helped reassure me that he was pretty okay, the OT did say that the reflux was probably causing some slight issues, but he is fine now. She just gave me some good exercise to help him along and they really worked well.
nugget 02-22-2007, 01:17 PM Jon Robbie punches me in the face or squishes my cheeks when nursing... he will roll his head fast side to side when falling asleep... he was thrusting or sucking on tongue two weeks ago (gone now)...rolling over onto belly and back again numerous times before crashes and moaning if I don't sing to him before bed... oh was staring at ceiling perpetually 3 weeks ago... oh, he yanks his ears so that they are red when nursing to... no ear infection... I think just rack it up to developmental... sounds normal... My brother-in-law says babies do strange things... he said, "anything that can poop out their own weight in a diaper can do anything"... true but when he had weird head movements likely Sandier's that's when you kind of go... ok that isn't normal. Hang in there...

Debbie, Dylan is a zombie when you pop in a Baby Einstein or any kid video. It used to bother me but like I said in my post to Ella, I just think he really enjoys those videos, they are colorful and musical and stimulating to him. Keegan could usually care less but he is definitely the more extroverted of the two. While Keegan will smile and babble to just about anyone, Dylan is definitely more reserved w/strangers but not like that with us. So I don't worry about that.
I also noticed that both of my kids have started tippy-toe walking and it actually reminded me of your post about this w/Jayden before. I swear they are on the verge of walking on their own and I read that a lot of babies do that right before they do start walking independently. So for now I am not too worried about that.
I think the head banging is just a way of expressing frustration (being a first time mom I am solely going off what I have read in books/magazines about that) and it usually decreases once they can express themselves more verbally. Not sure about the biting, Keegan likes to try and bite me sometimes but that kid is teething like a madman and recently chewed up the side of his crib so much I am going to have to sand it down and re-stain it if I ever want to get rid of it (standard teething guards don't fit on our cribs so I have found out!)

Steph, thanks for all the info. This is pretty ancient thread. LOL. Shes no longer thumping. She is jumping alover her crib, calling for me "Dada, dada" to come get her. You heard me right, she calls me dada. LMAO. She is a bit confused.

LOL, I didn't even see how old it was Ella. Well I feel stupid! It popped up under New Posts. Here I thought I was being so helpful and reassuring.
And of course she's been sitting up for ages and rolling and crawling and cruising. So no problems there. :)
