View Full Version : Nuvaring and milk supply?

So, I've been a really bad girl-I'm 6 months over due for my annual. I run out of bc tomorrow (currently taking mini-pill, nor qd). Doc won't call in a months worth for me w/o a pap, and I can't get in until Aug. 2, rut-ro! We would be devastated to get pg again right now, we are both back in school and working full time, so not a good time to add another little nugget!
So...here's my question: I used to work in a women's health clinic, and several of my friends used nuvaring, so I always brought home tons of samples. I have one left in the fridge, but I'm afraid that it may affect my milk supply. Any thoughts? I figure that my supply should be very well established (14 months today, happy b-day Ava!), but I'm scared that b/c we don't nurse around the clock like we used to, that my supply will dwindle. I definitely don't want to stop nursing, it's what works best for her to soothe her tummy at night, and be both enjoy it, very relaxing for both of us. It wouldn't be the end of the world to stop, I guess, but neither of us is ready to give up just yet.
So...Do I try the ring and hope for the best or got to a barrier method? They don't make samples of any of the mini-pills.
Help!

I know this probably isn't sperm, but he looks like a sassy little one, doesn't he? Or is it just me?:smt079

That smilie with the whip has been mistaken for sperm around here on numerous occasions. :rolling: I'm not sure that I'd try a different kind of bc without having a visit to the doctors first. I'd be afraid of the side effects that could happen to you or to Ava.

I don't know much about the Nuva Ring (obviously I don't know much about ANY sort of bc, seeing as I have a toddler and am pg again...*lol*); however, I do know that some moms do have issues with milk production when using birth control...and since you're no longer nursing as often as you did when she was teeny, I'm not sure your supply wouldn't dwindle.

Is there a way you can call the OB and get more info? (Will s/he answer your questions by phone?) If you're still without answers, I'd venture to guess that perhaps using non-hormone based birth control (condoms, etc.) might be your safest bet. Again, though, I'm not a doctor...:-)

Does it have estrogen in it? I know that anything with estrogen in it will cause your supply to dry up, no matter how well established it is. I went for birth control a couple weeks ago, and the only options that were available to me since i was bf was the mini pill ,the depo shot, and condoms . and they told me that i would prob bleed alot and frequently if i took the mini pill or depo and nursed at the same time.

ok i just googled it, and it said nuvaring should NOT be used while nursing, it can cause jaundice in the baby and the hormones can pass through your milk.

OMG, thanks for the info Amy. *yikes!* I knew that the pill could cause the milk supply to dwindle/dry up, but had no idea that other forms could be harmful to a nursing baby! :-(

That's awful, they offered my friend a ring at her 6 week check up! I've been on the mini since my 6 week, no probs, so I think I'll just hold out until my appt. Thanks ladies!

I am a little late here but I just wanted to say when you go for your visit as about an IUD I have the Minera (sp?) IUD and LOVE it. No pills to remember and birth control for 5 years!! If you want to try sooner all you do is have it removed. I have had no problems except at first I had some annoying spotting but otherwise I love love love it. I haven't even got my period yet and my doc said it could be me still bfing or the IUD (20% of women don't get a period will using it). Just a thought ;)

I'm late too, sorry. I don't know a thing about BC either...however, at my 6 week follow-up last year, I inquired about some. I decided against any because I was nursing. Anyhow, I was told that with an IUD, it can take up to one year or longer AFTER you remove it to get preggo again.
