Hello ladies,

I have a question regarding the probiotics.
My daughter is MSPI and is on Neocate and a week ago I've started giving her this Babydophilus (Primadophilus), but on the box it says that it may contain traces of milk and soy.
She's been taking fine, but her poo turned from green (Neocate) to yellow (yey) to almost black and back to stinky. (sorry TMI).
I wonder if she is sensing the traces of soy and milk proteins and it's beeing reflected in her waste.

Is there a babydophilus that is dairy and soy free that is safe to give to an infant?
My GI Doc said that there is only one product out there that's been FDA approved, but she has not used it on babies and therefore she did not give me the name of it.

Any thoughts on the subject???

HI, My DS is also MSPI and on Neocate. We use Babylife by Solaray. It is both soy and dairy free. I think Emma uses the same one:D

Is Babylife by Solaray in powder form? Is it alright to use on babies as young as 5 months old????

Yes it's a powder form that I add right in his formula. I started giving it to Connor when he was about 7 months old, I'm sure she would be fine with it but you could always ask your GI or Ped just to be sure. The one we use has to be kept in the refrigerator:D

That's the brand Emma takes, too. Emma's GI and kidney specialist recommended probiotics because Emma is on antibiotics everyday for her possible kidney reflux. Antibiotics can kill the good bacteria in the intestines with extended use. If Em stays infection free (urinary tract infections) until her next appt. in August the docs will take her off the antibiotics and the acidophilus.

I would still run it by your doctor just to make sure, but I think it says on the bottle the dosage for infants.

Aside from the MSPI part...it's normal for Neocate poop to range from dark green to black and smell to high heaven. It alwasy reminded me of cooked spinach and I won't even go there about the smell, lol.

www.kirkmanlabs.com also has milk and soy free probiotics. If you type in lactobacillus (which is what Noah's allergist recommended), it will come up. However, I would go with the other one if you can find it locally (I couldn't) because these are pills that you have to break open and divide. What a pain!

Thank you for all of your replies.
I've placed an order at our healthfood store for a Solaray babylife product in powder and will try it. She seems a lot happier when she takes probiotic, unfortunately the one I bought has soy/milk trace. I am not even sure it bothers her. How does one find out if you really and trully are allergic to milk protein???
Would I have to take her to the allergist? Do they have to draw blood???

My Ava is such a drama queen, but I don't blame her, after spending two weeks in children's hospital with late onset GBS at 4 weeks of age and being poked and proded by every possible doctor at all hours would do it it you.
I think she is allergic to people in white coats :)

If it is truly an allergy, the body produces a histamine and can usually be detected through blood tests or biopsies. Alexys tested negative through RAST tests, but positive through her endoscopy. She has obvious reactions though, hives rashes puking diaper rash and blood in her stools. An allergist would be the best place to start. If it is MSPI, an intolerance rather than allergy, I dont think there is any true way to diagnose other than symptoms, but i could be wrong

Our GI doc told us that she is MSPI, due to eczema on cheeks and legs, diaper rash, blood in stool and lethargy.
Anyway, once she was on Neocate she did so much better. I wonder if she ever outgrows the intolerance.

Forever hopefull...
