View Full Version : Success stories eliminating fuss foods?
yellow6 06-22-2006, 03:24 PM Tried to cut out dairy for a week in favor of soy milk when son was 4 wks and quit after it didn't seem to work. Now thinking about cutting dairy and soy. Did this work for anybody, and if so, how quickly? Thanks in advance...lots of questions today.
Noah's Mom 06-22-2006, 04:18 PM Hi! My son responded to a milk and soy elimination immediately. We were positive that it was successful within 48 hours. If there is a true intolerance or allergy, this should be the case, I believe. However, other kids just tend to do better milk and soy free, and it can take a while to see a difference then. Are you BFing? If so, I'm sure someone with experience can let you know how long it takes to leave your system.
Baby James 06-22-2006, 08:57 PM I cut out dairy when my son was six weeks old and had immediate success. He would scream for hours on end and a lactation consultant finally clued me in that it might be dairy and would be worth a try. I switched to soy milk for myself and cut out all other dairy products (butter, yogurt, cheese, ice cream, etc.) I did this elimination until he weaned himself at 6 1/2 months. I also had to cut out all citrus, nuts, and broccoli.
We found out when my son turned 14 months old that he is actually allergic to milk.
I have read before that it can take some time for the food being eliminated to leave your system. I was actually consuming quite a bit of dairy at the time so I did see results pretty quick. Good luck.
scarlet 06-22-2006, 09:15 PM I have cut out dairy and soy also, and have seen an improvement. Just to let you know most kids reacting to dairy seem to react to soy also, so this may be why you didn't see any results. You should notice some difference within a week, but it can take a long time for dairy top be completely removed from their system.
Our worst reflux trigger by far is corn.
OwensMom 06-23-2006, 01:51 AM Owen is MSPI and I'm nursing him. I cut out dairy and soy and it took a little while to be all out of our system but it was well worth it. It can take about 4 weeks for all the dairy proteins to be out of your body, don't know how long it would take for the soy.
Within 48 hours of going dairy and soy free she was less fussy and more settled but it really took 2 weeks to see real improvements and then we didn't see the biggest improvements for 6 weeks. It can take a long time to completely clear the system of all the milk and soy proteins so hang in there!
MommyofTwo 07-10-2006, 06:20 PM I am on the elimination diet still and my daughter is 1. I cut out all dairy, soy, wheat, egg, and beef (She'd scream for hours after I ate it).
It took weeks to see results. It can take up to 6 weeks to see real results, and it has been known to get worse before getting better. It did for me. But it was soooo worth it.
kkmum 08-16-2006, 08:10 AM I'm thinking about trying this but milk and soy seem to be in everything!!!
Anyone have a list of safe foods!
Yes, there is a list of safe foods (I'll get you the link).
I b'fed my dd for 19 months and did the MSPI elimination diet. It took about a week to start really seeing results (because there's residual stuff in your b'milk and working its way through the baby's system). It is tough, but it's really worth it.
Hang on and I'll get you the link. Also, see some of the stickies in the Allergies forum for more info, too. :-)
Here's a link to a list of prepared foods that are MSPI-safe:

If you're going to be eating fast food, many places list ingredients on their websites:
www.kfc.com (http://www.kfc.com)
www.burgerking.com (http://www.burgerking.com)
www.mcdonalds.com (http://www.mcdonalds.com)
www.wendys.com (http://www.wendys.com)
There is a website where you can order specialty allergen-free foods. Another mom just posted it a day or two ago--I'll see if I can find it again.
In our case, the offending foods (dairy and soy) caused severe constipation, cramping and vomiting. It took about a week for the constipation to improve, but the vomiting subsided very, very quickly after going on the diet.
thepeach80 08-20-2006, 10:52 AM I was dairy free from Evan's birth, went soy free by 2 mos, egg free at 5 mos, and finally did the total elimination diet at 11 mos. I weaned him to Neocate at 12 mos and that and rice were all he was allowed to eat till he was about 15 mos old. He finally got better on the TED and even better yet on the Neocate. For a while he was not tolerating any solids for the most part and still has problems w/ things like milk, soy, wheat, pineapple, and legumes. He can eat a lot more now than he used to be able to.
