How you found out your child had asthma and what symptoms they were having?

I was wondering if this could be a possibility for Andrew since he is always sick...and when he is sick, he wheezes horribly. Often when he is not sick, when he runs alot his breathing gets labored. Do you think this is something i should look into with his doc, or do you think he just has symptoms when he is ill?

My dh was the one to figure it out. I told the family doctor that we needed an inhaler for him. When Evan later had an MRI, the attending physician noticed all of the mucous, including what was being vomited up during the procedure and referred us to a ped. respirologist, who noted the GERD-related asthma, the constant clear mucous in the nose, the aspiration damage to the lungs, and the up-chucked clear mucous. He put Evan on Nasonex and 2 inhalers. We didn't have wheezing (but some do.) It was Evan's cough, trouble breathing, and mucous that were the signs.

Connor had a chronic cough from the time he was a few weeks old. His Gi referred us to a pulminologist who diagnosed him. When he gets sick it usually goes straight to his lungs. I would definetly bring it up to your Ped so they can check into it. I know that when I was little I had excersize induced asthma. I only needed an inhaler when I played soccer or was running a lot.

Stacy have I said before that maybe Andrew could have asthma? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Anyway in my boys it was always diagnosed as a cough at night, especially in the winter months, a normal preventer will take away the cough in a week, if they are sick the cough gets really bad and I have to increase the meds then. Generally no wheeze unless they are sick, I have noticed a couple of times though that when Coop is really running or something it is really labored.
