This is my first time on this website--I am desperately looking for some answers...My 8 month old son has been spitting up 24/7 since about 5 weeks (possibly sooner). He had an upper GI scan on Friday (the 9th), looking for possible problems with the muscle that can elongate causing reflux (can't remember the name??) Anyway, we waited 90 minutes & his stomach never emptied. There were small spots of barium in one bowel, but not sure how it got there?? We're going on the 14th to a children's hospital for another upper GI...any help with what questions to ask & what we may be facing would be appreciated. Side note...he has had a stomach virus since Saturday (could this have to do with why his stomach wouldn't empty??)
Thanks!!

Usually in cases like that..they are diagnosed with DGE. Hopefully...it was a fluke..but I don't think the flu would have anything to do with how quickly your stomach does or does not empty.
I hope you get some answers from the second upper GI...update when you can!

We had the same results with an upper GI. Our son has DGE. I hope it is the flu, but if not then you are not alone, there are many here who have children with DGE. Let us know what you find out!

The flu does cause emptying problems. Hence when you have the flu you can bring up stuff you ate in the morning in the evening it seems. However, I doubt that it would skew your testing so much that they would not be able to give you an indication of whether or not he has DGE. It may slow it even more but if DGE is there I think then it will show. Just my opinion though.
What I do know is that a "normal" stomach is to be 50 to 70% emptied within one hour. Iain was at 24 %. At 2.5 hours he was at 45 %. Did they give you a %?
The LES or lower esophageal spincter is what I think you are talking about.
Did they have any clue how the barium ended up in his bowel? Weird. Did they do any x-rays to check for aspiration?
My son did not have an upper GI, but rather a milk test and scoping so I can not help with first hand knowledge of that test. I would ask why a second test though and what they found in the first one to be explained. Then ask what the second test is targeting.

Thank you all for your replies & insight. We have our 2nd UGI tomorrow, so hopefully we will know what we are facing. I picked up a copy of the 1st scans & read the report...basically they seem to be looking at either annular pancreas or duodenal stenosis?? I guess maybe my guess about DGE may be way off??
