View Full Version : Waking Up WAYYY to Early

Hi, my dd is 11 weeks old. She's a pretty good sleeper and I don't have any "major" issues at this time except for that she wakes up WAY to early each morning. Right now, she gets her last bottle around 8:30 pm each night and then to bed (sometimes she'll take a little while to fall asleep). Well some nigthts she'll sleep through untill 5:00 am or 5:30 am. But most times, she wakes up at 4:00 am! I don't mind this now, but when I do return to work I really don't want to wake up to feed her an hour before I have to actually wake up. I would love to have her sleep until 5:00 am or 5:30 am.

She usually won't drink more than 5 ounces so I have tried that and I don't want to give her the last bottle any later than I already do. Anyone have any suggestions?? She is hungry when she gets up at 4:00 am as most days she sucks the bottle down and goes back to sleep until 8:00 am.

Thanks!

It sounds like she's doing really well at 11 weeks to sleep through so long, to fall asleep again after that early morning bottle, and to drink so much in a feeding already. I would have given almost anything to have Evan sleep for more than a few broken hours at night at that age and to drink that much at a time. I'm not sure, Kel, that there's anything that you can do to get even more sleep out of her.

My 9 month old doesn't even do that well most days!!

Will she go back to sleep if you don't go in ever? (I don't mean CIO cause I don't believe in that) I mean does she get really mad or just wine a bit? Izzy just wines a bit and goes back to sleep at least until 6 am most mornings but I do give her a 10pm feed before I go to bed.

Or maybe put some toys on the crib like a mirror or something? She may then at least play or coo herself to sleep...if nothing else it may give you a few extra minutes!

Really I am just rambling because my little one wakes up most nights for feedings. But I say keep trying different things till something finally works. Good luck!

I'm chuckling because I had a nonsleeper who was up every hour all night long for the first 14 months of her life--that's not to say that it's a piece of cake to get up at 4am with a little one, though!

I'm trying to remember, but I think at 11 weeks, the sleep pattern she has is pretty good. However, the early wake ups are problematic if you have to go to work. I'll have to double check my book, but I *think* you can try putting her to bed a bit later each night (do this gradually, in 15 minute increments!) to help her sleep a bit later in the morning.

After my dd goes to bed tonight, I'll double check my sleep book and see if this is something that's feasible with an 11-week old. :-)

I was going to suggest that too, Mary, but her baby is just up for a quick feed at 4 a.m., and then usually sleeps until 8 a.m. That would mean that once she goes back to work, the baby would be sleeping much longer, and that might interfer with when they need to be out the door in the morning.

Hello there! That sounds normal to me and what you should want to expect out of your 11 week old. I think you should be thankful! Even if she woke up twice for a feed you would be doing well.

No advice...maybe something in the air
My 2.5 and 1 yr old are getting up at 5;30 everyday...i tried a later bedtime but it didn't help
So, they go to bed early and get up early...for now

Hope you find something that helps!

Thanks, ladies. This is my first one so I have nothing to compare her to! Guess it sounds like she is sleeping well already, huh? I don't mind her getting up for the feeding its just 4:00 am will be so close to our wake up time when I return to work. If she's still doing this when I return to work, maybe I will put her to bed a tad earlier so she wakes up earlier in the morning...I guess it's just trail and error!!

I think that is pretty amazing for 11 weeks. Is this your first?
I think 830-4am is a VERY good stretch for that age to be able to go w/out needing to eat. I hate to break it to you but it sounds like you're lucky! ;)
I don't think I have any advice to give you because it really sounds like she IS sleeping really well for you. You may not want to hear that, but I think it's pretty typical for that age, and even on the "better" end of the spectrum, if that makes sense.

Yes, Sara, Aubrey is my first. She ususally doesn't fall asleep until anywhere between 9:00 and 9:30pm. She's not one to fall asleep with a full tummy for some reason...maybe it's the reflux or something. She used to wake up at 2:00 am, then it extended to 3:00 am, now 4:00 am. Sometimes she'll make it unti 5:00 am

Riiiight. I forgot about the going back to sleep after the 4am wakeup part. Ignore my advice, Kelly!

I'm trying to think of Zac's sleeping pattern at that age. I'm guessing he was going down around 10pm for the "night" and waking somewhere around 4 or 5 to drink and going back to sleep until 7ish and eating again. i'll have to check my journal to get back with you.

Sleeping thru the night is defined as 6 continuous hours. So sleeping from 9-4 is absolutely excellent!!! (Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure.)

Most babies go through a stage when they wake up, talk to themselves, fidget about, etc. and then go back to sleep. You can try keeping things very, very dark while you give her a bottle to tie her over to the wake up time you'd like her to develop. But, like others said, at 11 weeks... what you've got going on is a blessing!

Wow! tha ti sgreat for an 11 week old! I have a 3 month old who does sleep like that...She goes to bed between 8:30-9:30 and will sleep till maybe 12 or 1am where I feed her and we goe back to sleep then she refeeds at 4,7 and gets up at 8. I think that it is good for her to get up once for a feed at least that is what my dr told. Your little one is doing great!
