View Full Version : How to tell...

I posted a while back about Kaylin maybe having reflux. Every day, she seems to have heartburn. Yesterday, she asked me to smell her breath. At first, I thought "what's she up to now?" and giggled and smelled her breath. It smelled like puke and I asked her how she felt and she said, "I throwed up in my mouth, Mommy and it hurt". I asked her where and she pointed to where normal adults have heartburn. She tells me about something like this happening maybe 5-7 times a week. I'm just not sure if it's an attention getter or what, but I believe that I have never told her what happens to Cady when she has reflux, but I can't obviously swear on that as Cady's had it for so long. I'm not sure what to do here. She's six, so will a doctor even treat an older kid like this who has been generally healthy her whole life? I'm just thinking out loud, I guess. What do you guys think? How would you get a doctor to listen if she could be having reflux symptoms? We're changing doctors and I don't know how open her new ped. will be. Your thoughts?

Judy can you try Tums for her or Mylanta? I'd see if that helps first and if it doesn't let the doc know and maybe they will prescribe her something?

I would talk to the doctor about it. Watch what she eats and keep an eye on things. Maybe she has just a mild case and some mylanta or something may help.
Also , I'm not sure where you live but here in MI the pollen and other outdoor allergens are really wicked right now this can make someone have reflux who normally doesn't have a real problem if they have allergies.
My brother, sister have been having a really hard time lately.

You know, she does have environmental allergies and is on Claritin. Her allergic shiners are still really bad and I don't think the Claritin is doing enough. So, maybe her allergies are causing this bit of reflux activity. I'll try maybe giving her Mylanta after meals and see if that helps her out. It's easier with babies....they spit up, they cry, you know...with big kids, you have to take their word for it, because they don't cry about it. I don't want to prod her and make it seem like she'll get more attention for it, but unless I know how often it's happening, I won't be able to address it correctly. I'm not sure how to go about getting her to tell me how often it occurs without making it an issue. Any advice?

I would just casually say. "Hey, you know how you said you threw up in your mouth? Could you tell me whenever that happens again or if you hurt there again?"
Just don't make a biggy out of it. It's more the tone of your voice and your facial expressions she's going to read, than the words you use.

I hope this is just a passing thing, and you won't have to worry about it for long.

The Claritin itself maybe causing her to have reflux episodes especially if it is Claritin-D. I had awful reflux while on both Allegra and Allergra-D as well as Zyrtec.

Walker does this too. I thought his days of reflux were long gone but apparently not. He was a classic puker until the age of 16 months then went through a "blue" period for a year and that seemed to be it. Until last year when he occassionally began to complain of it, same way Kaylin describes it. I did think it was an attention seeking ploy as Iain and Curran are still refluxing pretty good but my key is the vomit smell on the breath. It can not be faked so we are going to address this with the ped too. Walker has also always had a chronic hoarse voice and a lot of "effortful speaking" which is not 100% linked to his speech delay. I would definately bring it up. Let me know how it goes. We are taking Walker in about a month.

Oh crap! I forgot all about that.
I was on claritin and had horrendous heart burn. I had to stop taking it.

I was gonna ask about allergy stuff too...I have allergy sensitive asthma and when my throat gets really tight, I sometimes reflux.

As a baby, Kaylin wasn't a spitter, was so happy all of the time, except when she had an ear infection, which she had...oh...all the time! She had ear infection after ear infection starting at 6 weeks old and we were at the verge of discussing tubes at her 1 year checkup. All of a sudden she stopped getting them as often, only getting one every 2 or three months compared to all the time. So, the ears is the only link she has to reflux, but then again, she has allergies, as well. She'll be seeing her new ped next Thursday, so I'll bring all these issues up with her. Her old ped was not ruling it out, putting her on allergy medicine to see if it took away the reflux episodes, thinking they were being caused by her allergies. So, 4 weeks after starting Claritin, she's still doing this reflus thing, which is worrisome. Her old ped was giving her 2 months to see if they stop once starting allergy medicine. So, we'll see what the new one says about it. Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I'll let you all know next week what she says.

My son was born with reflux but not near as bad as DD. But it would go way and then come back. It effected his eating and his attitude until he was lousing wieght, then it would be gone again. I took him in and he was diagnosed with eosenaphilic Gastritus (oh the spelling is so wrong but webMD.com has a bunch of info on it). During the summer we medicate him and periodically we take him off and see what happens. He has a lot of allergies that when the environmental ones come, it throws him over the edge. His body gets to much histamine and it creates this problem. I was told that he "mostlikely" will grow out of it. But I'll believe thatwhen I see it. I heard it many times with my DD who is now 5 1/2.

hi, i'm new here but i can relate to this thread. my little guy is 3 years old and still refluxing. argh. and we are fiddling with his meds again. prevacid 15mg 2x a day and now pepcid .5ml 2x a day, too. he is at least eatting more now but i am not sure what he is on is enough. the signs are sometimes hard to see and he gets upset if i ask him how he feels. i don't notice a puke smell but i do notice a horse voice sometimes, random coughing, and wanting to drink all the time. we do the mylanta thing sometimes, too. i really hate that little ones have this affliction. it's just not fair. we are better off than when he was an infant but it's just a long road some days. and it seems when they get older and their bodies change, the cues are different. they keep changing the rules. at least he can talk now and will sometimes say how he feels. my son also has a ton of spit and when he gets upset he has gobs of it to get rid of. does anyone's elses little one do this, too?
