View Full Version : test results... wierd?
MySillyBoys 06-02-2006, 03:29 PM They are giving me the run around!! We had chest xrays, NORMAL!
We had an Upper GI, NORMAL!!
They want to REDO the Modified Barium swallow. They called the lung dr, he wants to see if its asperation or if he needs to do a broncostope? (SP?)
Mean while Nathan is STILL choking, and coughing. All the DR's agree that its NOT normal.
Sigh. I guess i'm in the hospital for another day. At least nathan sleeping good!
ZacsMom 06-02-2006, 03:42 PM Poor little man. :( I'm sorry you're all going through this crud right now.
I really do hope they find the cause behind all of this.
Hang in there. I'll say a prayer for the little guy.

Hopefully he won't need the Bronchoscopy, I hope you get some answers soon...poor little fella:(
Pam_osteo 06-02-2006, 04:29 PM Has he experienced this for a long time, or is this something new? I hope you get the answers you need and quick.
ConnorsMommy 06-02-2006, 04:46 PM Awww poor baby! I'm glad that they havn't found anything abnormal but I hope they can figure out what's causing him to choke and gag! If they do have to do the Broncoscopy try not to worry too much. Connor had one when he was 8 weeks and it went fine. I think It was harder on me that him. I hope you get some answers soon and are able to go home! Keep us posted and hang in there:hug:

Diagnosed with Reflux in early april. Been like this EVER since! :(
ConnorsMommy 06-02-2006, 05:20 PM Connor had all the same tests done and everything came back fine. The Upper GI did show him refluxing but besides that the others were fine. He has had a cough since he was born also and use to choke. The modified barrium swallow showed no aspiration. His choking went away but he still has the cough although it is controlled by Pulmicort. Do you take him to Phx Children's? We are also in Phx:D

Yea we are at phx childrens!
The speech pathalogist just came to see one of his feeds. She said that he shows no signs of asperation. She said that i need to keep a log of when he's choking/coughing so everyone can be on the same page.
Our modified swallow showed that he does have deep penitration, but that has been taken care of by the thicker feeds.
I guess we'll be here all weekend to see whats going to happen on monday. SIGH! i SO dont wanna be here ALL weekend to JUST wait for monday!! UGH! :cwm10: :smt076 :smt076 :hissyfit: :censored:
That was one of Austin's symptoms when we first discovered his reflux. It was so scary. The GI just came to the conclusion that it was because of his reflux after 2 upper GI tests, a ph probe and a sleep study, then all it took was a medicine change and a stricter feeding schedule to fix it.
I don't know your son's whole story on this situation though so I'm not real sure if that helps you or not.
Leigh 06-02-2006, 09:11 PM Hang in there. Often the tests DO come back "normal" but it does not mean there is not a problem. After dealing with all this for Iain and his testing I have come to the conclusion that the tests are NOT accurate by any means and we need a better test for GERD if possible for children. Often testing does not prove accurate for children under age 5 as allergy testing, celiac testing and many many more tests have shown.
Iain was 100% solids averted at the age of 14 months and put on zantac. He was scoped 6 weeks later for upper endoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy and it showed "normal" but with dried blood found in his stomach. They told me not to worry about it as it was not from the stomach but higher up. I pressed for an answer as they were saying "no signs of GERD" and the answer was that the blood was leftover from esophagitis and now his esophagus was healing. There is a world of difference in those two conversations which I had in that the first one said he did not have GERD and the second said he did but was healing, KWIM? The final answer was that sometimes scopes show nothing because the meds ARE doing their job and that what is leftover is pain and memory from the GERD, if that makes sense.
Iain had a milk test done prior to the scopes and it showed moderate reflux, DGE, and signs of aspiration. It was NOT the test to determine aspiration and we chose not to pursue it at the time but we do know he aspirates due to his chronic asthma and infections. Sometimes the tests will not show things but the response to meds DO. Bottom line, if the med works then you know you are on the right track. Aspiration itself is very scary as it does lead to chronic problems so it means they must ensure that he is on the correct meds to prevent chronic infections and search for abnormalities. My guess is that if the testing does not yeild abnormalities then they will just brush you off with meds. In the end all you need is the right GERD management and sometimes it is hard to get there except by trial and error.
You will get there. {{{hugs}}}
zapsmom 06-03-2006, 09:36 AM My DD, Zoee aspirated on thin liquids. She just out grow it in the last couple of months. I hope they figure your little guy out soon.

Same thing with Sam - still no diagnosis of GERD either. Why redo the mod barium swallow if they already know that he aspirates?
How is the bed thing going?? I was just curious since I haven't heard since I gave you the link.
Hang in there. Things will get better with time.
