Hi...I am new...does anyone know if Kidney Reflux is in any way associated with Gastroesophageal (sp?) Reflux? My 15 mo. old has Kidney refux with a failure to thrive and now they are doing a GE Reflux scan next week... any thoughts?

Honestly, I don't think so. However, my 4 year old had mild kidney reflux, that she finally seems to have out grown and she has GERD too. There is also another little one about your babies age on here that has kidney reflux too. Hopefully, her mommy will come along and share some more insight with you.
Has your baby ever been tested for GERD or has it ever been suspected before now? Is his/her FTT due to constant kidney infections or is it that she/he has GERD symptoms or simply just a non-eater? I am just curious what brought the dr.'s to decide to test you little one for GERD.
What test are they doing? If they are doing an upper GI then it isn't reliable for GERD, as the reflux doesn't always show up on the test. It is more for looking at all of the anatomy in there.
Welcome to the boards! Please feel free to ask any questions you have. You will find a lot of support and answers here. Good luck with the upcoming testing.

I wouldn't think there is a link, but you never know I guess since there is still so much the doctors dont really know about this. In our family, the cousins have kidney reflux and my kids have this kind of reflux....and there are none that share both issues. However, my son was not diagnosed with reflux until 15 months and he truly had no signs until 12 months. So I guess its not unheard of to get it when they are older...although our GI says its strange. (But my daughter definitely has had reflux since birth and was actually diagnosed prior to my son's diagnosis even though she is younger)

Hello! My daughter Emma (also 15 months old!! :)), has "undiagnosed kidney/bladder issues with recurrent UTI's" according to her nephrologist. He has unofficially labeled her as having mild kidney reflux (grade 1 or 2) but the xray image was hard to read b/c she was so full of stool at the time. :( (That's another story. ;))
Emma also has GERD, and her reflux did show on the upper GI done when she was 6 months old. Emma refluxed 7 times in less than 2 minutes - some into the throat region. Melissa is right, though. Sometimes reflux doesn't show up on the scan.
I have never heard of a link between GERD and kidney reflux, but our ped often says that Em has an immature body. I'm hoping as she gets older her body will catch up! ;)
Is your daughter on any antibiotics to keep her UTI's away? Em's on Septra everyday for this.
