Jayden still has what I concider a bad reaction (allergic) to his formula "Nutramigen" Last time I spoke with the GI she mentioned changing him to "Neocate", but wanted to consult with another GI.
Well she called Stephanie back and suggested trying a med,????don't know what , Steph said she would rather wait than put him on more meds (she's very anti med) GI thought that was a good Idea and that Grandma wanted more meds!!! That would be me!!!
We discussed fromula!!
What I I would like to know is what formula your child eats and what lead you to it?

Mason was on Neocate for a while. Avoid it at all costs Debbie, lol. It is the most hypo-allergenic stuff you can get. He may need it. But it is God-awful expensive! Like around $1,000 per month unless you happen to be one of the lucky few that can get insurance to pay (rare). It also makes the stinkiest, nastiest poop on the planet! Think of cooked spinach (dark green to black) that smells like....God, how does one describe that smell?

He may need it though. But if you have other options I would explore them. Neocate is last on the list! lol

Well, I had intended to nurse Joshua so I never even thought about formula...but he wouldn't latch long enough for my milk to let down. I pumped full time for about a month.

He had a bit of Similac in the hospital so we used some of that to supplement the breastmilk. He refused it. A friend had said that Good Start was the closest taste to breastmilk. He like it but that was about when his reflux flared. So, the Ped recommended we do Lacto Free. It is the sweetest apparently and he likes it. Plus, removing the lactose took away all the gas issues he was having. I tried regular formula a few months ago but it caused a reflux flare. So far, he has been fine with yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese so we'll see...

Long answer to your question...sorry about that! Hope you can get things figured it for Jayden!! :)

Miori, is it Good Start Lacto free?

No, they don't make one. There is Enfamil LactoFree and then one that Similac makes - can't think of the name since I didn't use it. We have since switched to the Parent's Choice brand you can get at Walmart. They are the only ones who make a store brand of Lacto Free and it has saved us a lot of $$, but we are getting the same stuff. :)

After much trial and error with formulas (regular enfamil, Soy, Netramigen, and Allimentum) Connor still had reactions like bad gas and very irritable so our GI switched him to Neocate. It has been a lifesaver for us. It is very $$$ and unforturnatley our ins. won't cover it but if Jayden needed it maybe Steph would qualify for help. I would say try the Neocate and see what happens. Maybe the Dr. can give you a few samples?

Allimentum is basically the same thing as Netramigen. It's broken down but still has traces of Milk so he probably would have the same problems with it. Neocate is Amino acid based and doesn't contain any dairy at all.

You are cute, Debbie...next time you want to do that, instead of going down to the Reply area...click on the Quote button in my post (or rather the post you want to quote). It is at the bottom of each persons post...to the right of their signature area. Does that make sense? :)

Nutramigen and Alimentum are the same thing, just different brands. They are a deriviative a cow's milk formula, but they are so extensively hydrolized (broken down) that *most* babies, even milk allergic ones, don't react to it. Therefore, they are referred to as hypallergenic formulas. Now I said most babies. There are still babies who can react to even the broken down proteins of these formulas. Em was one of them. On milk based formula...she only made it a day and a half. She projectile vomited and was covered head to toe in a rash. What little did come through her system came out the other end undigested. So we switced to soy before even leaving the hospital. She kept it down a bit better, but she got bloody stools with it. So she was then switched to Allimentum (basically the same as nutramigen) but still had bloody, mucusy stools. So she went to neocate. Neocate has no whole proteins, only amino acids. So basically it is virtually impossible to be allergic to it. Em has still had some mucus on and off...but that is from her EGID, but has had no blood since day three of neocate, except for one occasion...but it wasn't related to the forumula.

I hope that helps you figure out if he needs Neocate. It is majorly expensive. How long has he been on Nutramigen? It can take two weeks to a month to really see if a formula is going to make a difference.

What I do is hit Quote and get the whole thing...then I just delete what I don't want. Be sure to keep the funny looking codes at both ends - the Quote in [ ] - that is what makes it work. :)

Catherine was on Alimentum from birth through 9 months and has been on Isomil ever since. She's now 16 months.

What are you hitting?? I hit the little symbol over the quick reply box that looks like a box you see n comics....basically the last one on there.

it gives me this.....

Then I just copy and paste what I want in the middle.

How do you get the whole thing Miori?

He's been on it for about two months and it's not gotten any better. Today he stood between my legs to eat as he rubbed his eyes non stop and digs with his fingers into his face and pulls his ears as his eyes get redder and redder with dark bags/ which go away withing a 1/2 hour after he eats.

Hmmmm....that is unusual. I mean, you'd think he would have more long term effects if he were allergic. Could it be that he is refluxing during his feeds and that is causing this? Just reaching here. Em's eyes water and she rubs them when she refluxes. I don't know Debbie. It is an odd reaction, for a formula. It sounds more like what you get with like hay fever or something. What do the dr's say? Have any of them heard of a reaction like this to formulas? My kids just have rashes and GI symptoms for their food allergies...so I guess I am not much help here.

Since he has been on it so long, I would give the neocate a try for a couple of weeks to see if it makes a difference. Then you will have a definitive answer. You don't need a prescription unless you are going through insurance or WIC. You can just order it yourself. It's worth a shot, and I don't think it would hurt him....might help him.

My daughter was on Good Start for her first year, a milk-based formula. However, once we put her on cow's milk, she reacted like crazy, so I'm thinking I would have had a healthier, happier baby had we put her on a hypo-allergenic formula as an infant.

Tara started out on regular Enfamil and then we switched right away to the Enfamil Gentlease and still didn't see any difference. We tried Prosobee and she hated it so we went back to Gentlease. After months of fighting her to eat we then switched back to Prosobee and now she is great! I kicked myself for not keeping up with the Prosobee in the first place, but she just didn't want anything to do with it. Now she loves it!!
