Is it possible for a infant that would eat everything you gave him to suddenly develope new symptoms like DGE babies .

I noticed weeks before Jayden and the rest of us got sick that he was puking food hours after he ate. It is worse now and i wonder if this is why he only eats an oz or two at a time and then gags, cause he feels full.Take today for instance he ate sevral times from a bottle at most 3 oz in one sitting. He slept for 2 hours and when I picked him up after his nap I could hear the formula sloshing in his stomach. i let him play for about a 1/2 hour and then tried to give him peas/rice cereal for lunch he reluctanly took two small bites and on the third began to gag that ended that feed. We did manage to get 14 oz into him today thats the most he's eaten in a week. He also had a wet diaper (they have just been damp) and no diarrhea. 2 small spitups with burps. Still uncomfortable after he eats but a much better day than we've had in the last week+.
I also wonder if he was on to much Zantac could it have reduced his stomach acid so much he now doesn't have enough to digest food properly?
Would Yogurt help with balancing the enzymes?

Grasping at straws trying to find an answer for a babv that ate with great pleasure to unable to swallow enough to sustain him.

By the way, What kind of candy?

I think its entirely possible that he may have temporary DGE as a result of the flu. When Brayden had the flu in February, this happened with him. He was hospitalized afterward and they said that some kids take a lot longer than others for their stomachs to start working following a bad flu virus. I think it took him almost a month for that issue to go away...He never had DGE before that we were aware of...and I don't think he necessarily has it now...He is on Reglan, but that was only added in the last month to see if it would help him eat (however he would drink all day if I let him)

DGE can def be a result of a stomach bug. Everthing just gets irritated an inflamed in there and it all slows down. It is temporary though, Debbie, I'm sure. He's been a sick liitle guy and it will take his tummy a while to get back up to par.

I agree with Cheryl and Melissa.

Probiotics would help him a lot. It is a supplemental form of the good bacteria found in yogurt. In general, I would stay away from dairy products right now as in anyone recovering from a bad stomach virus has trouble tolerating it. The good bacteria called multidophilus found at most health food stores can be added to his formula in powder form and help aid in digestion. His tummy just needs more time to recover and this would probably help it out.

Thankfully he was a great size to begin with! Can you imagine how awful if he was already not growing well? I hope he gets better soon and packs the pounds back on!!

I agree with the others, just wanted to second Carla (I think it was Carla) about staying away from dairy for a while :smt047

Thanks,
Steph and I both spoke with the GI at childrens today, they want Jayden to go in for a weight check tomarrow now that he is feeling better. I told her again he was not eating well before he got sick but they want to blame it all on his flu.....why doesn't anyone listen to everything you say to them? They hear he was sick so thats the problem No it's not, it contributed to it but it's not the only thing going on here.grrr...

I hear you on that! Of course they want to blame it on the easiest most convenient thing, I have been there. Unfortunately it just means waiting longer for them to see the truth...

And that means more suffering for the kids...It's so maddening!

Poor Jayden! :( Let us know how the weight check goes.

Our ped said that he thinks being on a PPI (like Prevacid and Prilosec) can slow digestion down in some children, mimicking DGE symptoms. He said it's not "written" anywhere, but he sees many patients that have decreased appetites after being put on a PPI. The child doesn't really have DGE, just some of the symptoms.

Wasn't Jayden recently put on Prevacid? Just a thought...but it probably is just the recent flu bug. I know after I have the flu, the last thing I feel like doing is eating a huge meal.

Keep us posted.

He started the Previcid the day after the flu started but like I said he was already not eating and thats why he was going to the GI in the first place. The day we saw the GI is the day the flu began. I know it's hard to know what is what when he has the flu but he has had such a wieght loss..... I told the ER Doctor he lost a pound over night and he looked at me like right lady and kept talking about givimg himfluids every 1/2 hour...well guess what he wont drink thats why were here!! grrrr always seems like your the only one that knows what your talking about!!

((((hugs)))) I so understand! Eli was getting sick so much that it was hard to talk to the docs about it all because it could be blamed on ilness for a year straight and it was so frustrating but eventually they got it. Or, find someone who will.
