View Full Version : oatmeal
Mirra 05-06-2006, 07:03 PM I tried Oatmeal with Mason...holy cow!! He chowed that stuff down, lol. TOTAL difference. Guess he wasn't keen on the rice.
Should I let my little piggy eats as much as he wants or cut him off at a point? Do you guys feed solids 2 or 3 times a day?
ZacsMom 05-06-2006, 07:10 PM At that point I think I was doing it once a day. Well...maybe it was once in am and once in pm. I think 2 tbsp is what i was told at that point.
Mirra 05-06-2006, 11:27 PM Should I cut him off then? He must not like the rice cereal because he could just not eat that oatmeal fast enough. I'd bring the spoon up and he'd get so excited that his hand pooped into his mouth before I could fit the spoon in, lol. He was trying to shovel it in himself.
Is it better to feed solids WITH his bottle feeds or in between?
BraydenandBrynasMom 05-07-2006, 12:57 AM I think you can do it either way - but make sure to give him his bottle first if you are doing it together....and make sure he doesn't eat too much in between that he wont go for the bottle (although I'm not sure you'll ever have that problem with him). Remember that the formula is the main thing he needs - everything else is just for his pleasure. That's what my favorite pediatrician told me. He said it really doesnt matter what or when you give the solids as long as it doesn't interfere with them drinking their formula. Solids are just for some variety and so they eventually learn to eat for when that are over 1 year.
Emily M 05-07-2006, 07:29 AM I agree, I give Jackson his bottle first, then his solid.
This is our schedule
630 bottle
730 solid
1030 bottle
1130 solid
230 bottle
5 solid
630 solid
7 bed
10 last bottle before night (this one he is asleep)
When Jackson was that age, he wasn't taking his bottle hardly at all, so I was trying to get him to eat whatever I could, so I let him eat as much as he would. But, I would say, anything over 2 oz. I would stop him. At this point. LOL
Mirra 05-07-2006, 08:40 AM Thanks guys. Emily, I am doing something similar.
7:30-bottle
9:30- solid
11:30-bottle
3:00-bottle
5:30-solid
7:30-bottle
8:00-bed
I'm going to up his solids AND formula feedings even though he is on 32 oinces. He is just still way to hungry. He's most hungriest between 11:30-3:00 (obviously) and for some reason he's starving by 6:30-700.
With the exception of that middle one, he eats something every 2 hours and is still hungry. I was concerned because I thought if I stop that and feed him with his bottles, would he make it 3-4 hours?? lol And I worried if I should be feeding him every 2 hours or so. I mean, before he was going 4 hour stretches and even then wasn't crying for food, Ijust gave it to him. Now he is always hungry again.
When he eats his cereal, I am making about 2 1/2 TBS of cereal with 4 1/2 TBSP of formula and he gobbles it all up. I know he could definately eat mroe if I let him.
It is very tough for me to decide what to give him. His height is in the 95th percentile and his weight is in the 97th. I was shopping at the store yesterday and my DD commented on this baby she saw who who easily grabbing his toys. She said, "Mom, look how advanced that baby is! He can hold all his toys so easy and looks newborn." I asked the lady how old he was and she said just over 4 months. Mason is just under 4 months and I swear looked twice that baby's size, rofl. We were just floored never realizing just how big he really is. But he is proportionate to his height. He is also wearing 9 month clothes when they have feet because he is so long.
So I am thinking, on one hand he seems young and I don't want to hurt him by giving him too much solids. On the other hand I think, he is just a big big boy and let's give him what he wants and see if he will eventually tell me he is full.
So if I up his solids and formula, and let him just keep going until he stops (God only knows how much that would be), do you think that is okay? I could try it today and let you all know how much he eats. I don't want to hurt him.
menfusse 05-07-2006, 11:35 AM Bonnie, try giving him his solids and bottle together. I mean, give him his solid in the morning, and then immediately after give him is bottle or vice versa. I always gave abby solid then bottle. Like she would wake up at 7. I would give her oatmeal, about 2 tbsps. or so, maybe more. Then give her a bottle. You could do the bottle first, if it works better. Then she would have her next bottle alone, around 11. Then at about 2:30 she would have like a veggie or fruit, and a bottle, same deal. Then she got a bottle at 6:00. Then cereal at 7 and bed. She woke for another bottle later in the evening around 10. We did that at first, then as she got older, I fed her on demand. She LOVED food way better than a bottle any day. I would be worried too at his age, but then again, his body is probably instictively trying to maintain its size. KWIM?? You will probably just have to experiment, and see what works to keep him satisfied. I would think, that you could increase his formula by maybe an oz a bottle and that might make a big difference, with out having to increase his food intake right now. Try that first, because formula is more important. Then if you are still finding he is starved, add an extra meal. It may be, like you said, he is so big he needs to eat more. Good luck!
BraydenandBrynasMom 05-07-2006, 03:05 PM I wonder if he got used to his tummy being really full from comfort feeding and so he likes to have a full tummy a lot. If you are worried he is getting too many calories you can make his oatmeal with water instead of formula. However, I wouldn't worry about his size. He sounds fine proportionally. In fact my kids are usually 35-50th for weight and only 10-25 for height, so I would think they might be fatter than him! Don't compare his size to other kids, you'll go crazy. My friend was doing that with our kids this morning at church. Her son is only 1 inch shorter than Brayden....but Brayden is 19 months and he is only 9 months. Oh well, Brayden is gonna be short. It is a little strange that they wear the same size clothes and diapers with a 10 month age difference, but what are you gonna do?
