View Full Version : More silly questions..
Mirra 05-02-2006, 03:10 PM Heh, I need a mommy manual. ;)
Is it okay to give Mason a couple ounces of water at 14 weeks if he is hungry but it's not quite time for a feed and he's already had cereal?
Also, I am thinking about trying out one juice in a couple days. Just in case the rice cereal constiptates him and also so I could mix a little in his cereal. I'll wait a few days to make sure the rice cereal is still citting well with him. What would be the best juice to try? I think I read no more than 4 ounces a day? And it's probaby a little better to dilute it with water isn't it? What would be best that is both easy on the tummy and possibly helpful if he has any poop issues (though so far so good, but he's had a minimal amount of cereal as he's not used to it). Pear? Prune? Apple?

Do you have the "What to expect the 1st year" book? It's a good resource! Of course, so is IRD! :)
We started giving J water at about Mason's age, I think. We still do it when he has solids or a bad case of the hiccups.
Haven't really done juice yet. I've offered pear a few times but he's not interested. I buy the Gerber juice in the little bottle, and I think it's fine to use it the way it is. I've not done apple juice b/c it tends to be more acidic, and he's had issues with apples in the past.
When he was on Zantac, the Ped had us give him 1oz of Prune juice 2x/day b/c of constipation. That's the only time we've used prune juice.
Hope that helps! :)

Noah's Mom 05-02-2006, 03:21 PM My ped would have said absolutly no water at that age, but maybe there are other opinions. I don't see why it would hurt him since he's on target with weight, so maybe that was just in reference to Noah.
You should dilute the juice 3 parts water to 1 part juice at least. I only used 1/2 ounce juice with 3.5 ounces water at first, and it never did go well for us so I don't offer it at all at this point. White grape juice is the least acidic of the juices, BUT it is still HIGHLY acidic. I actually recently ran this in my lab in one of my classes, and its still off the charts for acidity, just not as bad as the others. However, I'd wait until your given the go ahead from your ped about the juice.

Oh! You know I was just teasing you right??? :)
EmmasMommy 05-02-2006, 03:24 PM Our doctor said no water until 6 months. It has something to do with a toxicity building up in their system. That could be with loads of water, though, I'm not sure. Sara (ZacsMom) was told the same thing by her doctor. I remember b/c we had a conversation about it once.
I would call your ped's office and see what they would recommend for him.

Okay, so it wasn't just my ped, then. If I had to offer something else to Noah because he WOULDN'T drink his formula, it had to be unflavored Pedialyte, but I guess this really isn't your situation, is it?
Mirra 05-02-2006, 03:36 PM Maybe I will just give him an ounce of formula or something to get him by until he is able to take in more solids. ;)
And yeah Miori, hehe I knew. I was just blushing, heh.
I think my ped comes from the same school of thought as Amanda's and Maggie's peds. He told me absolutely no water until after 6-8 months and no juice (unless absolutely necessary) until 8-12 months.
That being said, every ped has his own opinion, so I'm all for giving yours a call to see what s/he says.
Good luck!
AndrewsMommy 05-02-2006, 06:28 PM water would be fine...however Andrew's ped didn't let us give juice until 9 monthsish:)
I rarely give him juice anyway...it always seems to do him in!
mommy2punkins 05-02-2006, 09:17 PM Bonnie...I think I have probably told you this before, but for Austin, his ped said for me to give him the prune juice cocktail (2 oz. prune juice, 2 oz. water, and 1/2 ounce pear juice). We had problems with constipation early on and this worked wonders. I only gave it to him every other day and then switched to about every 3rd day. Now we have switched to 4 ounce little bottles of Gerber Apple Prune juice. She said that it would be OK too. But she did say to use only 2 ounces of the juice and add it to 2 ounces of water. His BM's are going great. He normally goes every 3 days anyway and I give him the juice mix on Day 2. He takes a couple of teaspoons of pears in his cereal and that helps too.
Hope this isn't too confusing. I know every Ped is different, but mine is great. She is more concerned with his comfort than " what the books say".
kawaiitenshi 05-02-2006, 09:21 PM Alex's GERD was so bad, poor kid had no juice til he was 9-10 mos. cuz i tried it earlier and made him heave all day... should prob check with your Ped first.
