View Full Version : Do they really need hypoallergenic formula?
Sara0624 04-13-2006, 02:30 PM Gracie had her first GI appointment yesterday on her 3 month birthday. He was pleased with her progress and wants to keep everything the same. I was a little disappointment because I guess I expected him to "fix" her, but she has made a lot of progress. She's on 10 mg of zegerid and we thicken with a mixture of oatmeal and rice. My question...I want to try switching her back to regular formula from Nutramigen. We originally tried the hypoallergenic formula at the beginning before the meds, and I wonder if she needs it. Does anyone have experience with this? What about Gentlease? Thanks!!! Sara
Hmmm...I'm not much of an expert on this, so other moms will know a lot more.
What were her symptoms that made her ped switch to hypo formula? Does the GI know you want to switch? I guess I'd talk with the doc and find out what made him/her put her on this and get his/her opinion on switching back.
I do know that many kids are put on hypo formula because the proteins are broken down and much easier to digest. Perhaps this is why your dd was put on it, too...?
LaurensMommy 04-13-2006, 02:40 PM It depends on whether or not you put her on the hypo or the doc did. If the doc did, then he probably had good reason. Is she allergic to milk, soy, both? Once Lauren was on hypo. formula, we never switched back. There was no reason to as the GI diagnosed her MSPI.
Sara0624 04-13-2006, 02:40 PM The GI doctor encouraged me to try the switch. We put her on the Nutramigen before the pediatrician suggested that she might have reflux. She rarely spits up and fussed horribly during feedings, so I guess she thought it might be an allergy. It was the thickening and the meds that finally made a difference.
LaurensMommy 04-13-2006, 02:51 PM I'd keep her on it.
Miori 04-13-2006, 06:25 PM From my experience, I just tried a switch from Lacto-Free to Regular and it was a nightmare. His reflux was so awful! And that was just 5 days of trying to switch.
Each kiddo is different, but for right now, I'm staying where I am!
Cam's sahm 04-13-2006, 06:56 PM Well...We've used 7 different formulas and none of them ever took away the reflux (we were not on meds at this point and were told it was colic)...I can't count Nutramigen beause she couldn't stand the taste of it...We finally stopped at Gentlease...She liked the tasts and ..........you know? now that I look back, she was reflux free for about 2 weeks in the begining. Then I switched to Good Start and the same results...she was great for the first 2 weeks then eerything came back. God that's weird...she does great on new meds and formulas. As opposed to the normal..."give it 2 weeks advice" lol I'd say try Nestle Good Start first....it also has comfort protiens. www.colichelp.com (http://www.colichelp.com) has a poll on Enfamil vs. Good Start for colic babies and Good Start got about 3500 positive votes and Enfamil got around 700. So, ??? I think that kind of proves that you have a better chance with less gas etc with good start. They've been making formula WAY longer than any other company too.
The comfort proteins Ginette mentioned are partially broken down milk/soy proteins, which make Good Start easier to digest. (Geez, I get a 10-minute crash course in formula this week and you'd think I'm an expert!)
I would be willing to bet that's why Good Start won the poll. :-)
If the GI is suggesting you switch formula, what formula did s/he suggest? You might want to just call and ask to be sure.
KaitlynsMom 04-14-2006, 02:08 PM My daughter has been on Hypo since she was 1 month old... we've tried 3 times to switch her (without Dr's knowlegde). The first time we tried going back to regular formula and then tried Good Start/Gentlease (same formula different company) and then even tried Soy. She always did very well the first 5 days... no issues and no reflux flare... then after the 5th day she was a complete mess and had horrible gas and tummy pains. She didnt handle it at all... so we've stuck with the hypo and honestly... my Dr was right... if it's working like it is, why would you want to change anything and F it up??
Just so you know, we wanted to change her back because the cost of hypo was killing us... at this moment... we just decided to get it over with since she only has (hopefully) two months left on formula and we're just sticking it out!
Hope that helps!
Sara0624 04-19-2006, 07:48 AM Well, Operation Regular Formula failed miserably. I added 1 oz of Good Start to three feedings. She was spitting up (normally silent refluxer) and crabby. So, in the trash it goes! Thanks to all for your input.
KaitlynsMom 04-19-2006, 02:50 PM Hey, at least you know! :)
psalm91 05-04-2006, 02:30 PM both of my daughters (13 yrs apart) have(had) reflux and both use(d) Nutramgin.
