View Full Version : Dumb question, I suppose...
Miori 04-12-2006, 03:44 PM When I make Joshua's bottles, I use 6oz of water but by the time I get all the formula powder and rice cereal added, it is more like 7oz when mixed. (holy long run on sentance!)
So, should I be using less water or something?
 (that's me, btw!)
AndrewsMommy 04-12-2006, 03:47 PM I would only add a little more water if it is too thick..otherwise I would probably say no
aidinsmom 04-12-2006, 03:51 PM Only use less water if you are wasting an ounce (ie Joshua's not eating the whole 7oz). But if he eats all his bottle, water, formula, rice and all then make it the same way.
You want to make sure he is getting the right amount of water/formula mixture. If you use less water then you will have to use less formula thus creating a very strange vortex of do I add more or less of each.
I myself feel I should be a chemistry major at this point between the powder formulas, increasing cals, measuring meds, blah blah blah...lol :book:
sixdogssixcats 04-12-2006, 04:02 PM You should end up with more than 6oz. The proportion is 2oz of water to 1 scoop of powder for a normal concentration. If you want to feed exact ounces, you need to mix up a larger quantity and then pour the mixed formula into a bottle. I used to mix a quart at a time when Catherine was younger and it was critical to count every single drop.

LOL! Can you tell that I am not the least bit analytical or science minded? hee hee
Nathan'sMommy 04-12-2006, 05:30 PM I had this question too, and actually wrote a post about it about a year ago, and asked doc about it. LOL When you mix six ounces of water with three scoops, it ends up about 7 oz. And when you are counting ounces for the day, you get to count it as 7 ounces! Yippee!!! Every ounce counts, you know? ;)
Mirra 04-12-2006, 08:03 PM Unless you are using Neocate for some freaky reason they do it backwards. You do the powder then add the water to the correct ounce. All the others are like they said above me :)
menfusse 04-12-2006, 08:33 PM yeah, isn't that weird? plus it is 1 scoop per 1 oz.
Carla 04-12-2006, 09:23 PM I dont know if anyone noticed though that Neocate is one extra scoop per oz of water....it is very confusing. If you want a 6 oz bottle of neocate you are supposed to put 5 oz of water and 6 scoops of neocate for the normal formulation. I went through many frustrating days until I spoke to a rep at Neocate who cleared it up.
sixdogssixcats 04-12-2006, 09:50 PM When Catherine was on Neocate, it was one scoop of powder per 1oz of water instead of one scoop to 2oz like regular formula.
Mirra 04-12-2006, 10:08 PM Yeah, it is the same.
menfusse 04-12-2006, 10:27 PM Have you ever looked on the can of neocate for bulk directions? It starts out at 7oz of water...8 scoops of forumula. But when you get up to the 24 oz mark, you put 24 scoops for 24 oz of water. What is up with that? It doesn't matter much to me, because I follow a totally different recipe to make it more cals. I just thought I was weird.
candalria 04-12-2006, 10:44 PM No question is a dumb question if you don't know the answer. I have thought the same thing when I was thickining Izaviaha's formula before we found Enfamil AR just for refluxers.
