Many people like Simply Thick b/c it is a gel that comes in small packets and it is easy to prepare and maintains its consistency (where Thick It and Thicken Up often continue to thicken after mixing) It also doesn't change the appearance of the liquid- I've had in water and you would not know it was in there when you look at it. It also has no calories prepared at nectar consistency where the others can add 40 to 50 calories per 8oz serving. I have heard from other SLPs who use it in NICUs with their patients that it is not absorbed by the gut and passes right through which may or may not be helpful in your son's diarreah problems - Thickening agents are not supposed to act as laxatives and you may be right that the corn starch in Thick It is causing a reaction in him. Simply Thick does has Xanthan gum which can have corn in it but I have heard of children who have corn allergies doing better with Simply Thick over Thick-it.

I don't really thinkhe has a corn allergy as he did fine on Neocate by itself, or better I should say. But he choked too much. He was also constipated.
Thick It immediately gave him diareha. I look forward to trying this stuff then :) Since he was constipated prior to Thick It he may go back to that so I should probably discuss that with the GI as well.

I wasn't suggesting that he did have a corn allergy but it seemed by other posts that you were fairly certain that the Thick-it and perhaps the corn starch in it (which is far, far more than in Neocate) was giving him diarhea. I mentioned that others with corn allergies did better on Simply Thick thinking if did react to the Thick-It's corn starch, Simply Thick might not cause him to have the same diarhea (hopefully, fingers crossed for him). I am not sure about the whole "it is not absorbed by the gut" claim and how that might effect his diarhea issues. Again hopefully Simply Thick will give him the thickness he needs for swallowing but not diarhea and if the contispation returns like before when he was on Neocate only, his doctors can give you some suggestions for managing it -like prune juice or karo syrup.
Good luck with it and let us know how he does. Simply-Thick can be alot more expensive than Thick-It but I hope it gives him the results he needs.
