My son was diagnosed with reflux early on (at one month). We got him on the right meds with some trial and error, Axid, Reglan and Prevacid. We prop his crib up and use a Tucker sling. He is on Alimentum, thickened with rice cereal. He is about to be 4 mos. In the past few days he has started waking up in the middle of the night again, eating very little and refusing to eat, he obviously is hurting again if his formula is too thin, he's had a bout with bad congestion in the morning. So we have taken him in to see if his meds need to be adjusted because he is growing out of them. His ped did adjust them yesterday. We are also going to try to start solids to supplement. My frustration is, he is normally a really good eater, 30-36 oz a day and now he barely takes anything at all. Sucks on the nipple but will hardly take anything in. It's got me very upset and I know there are many of you who have deal with this. Do your children have, for lack of a better word, relapses like this? Do they start to eat again once the meds are adjusted? Any advice or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. I just want my little man to start eating well again. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the boards. The circumstances aren't the greatest for meeting grounds but glad to see you've found us.
Unfortuneatly your son sounds like he's just having one fo those "flare ups" which came THE WORST at 4 months of age. (My son was diagnosed at 3wks). Is your son on Axid, reglan and prevacid or are these meds you've tried and switched over? We were on Zantac as a newborn but found great relief with prevacid.
He could need his meds adjusted, but he could very well be going through a flare up that tends to happen around that age.

Mmmm...tough spot to be in! I'm glad you found us! This is an amazing group that has really gotten me through some rough times!

I had the same experience with my son at about 4mths. Like ZacsMom said, it does tend to peak between 4-6mths and should get better once solids are introduced and he is sitting upright more often - ie, sitting/standing. An increase in meds worked for us, along with added more rice cereal to his bottles.

Sounds like you are on the right track with your Dr. I hope that things improve soon!!!! :)

Thanks for the supportive posts!!!! It is a comfort to talk to folks who have had similar issues to deal with. It's interesting to hear that this is common at this age.

Declan is currently taking the Reglan, Axid and Prevacid. We started on Carafate but that didn't really ever seem to do much of anything.

He is now been upped to 1.5 mL of Reglan (3x's a day), 3 mL of Axid (2wice a day) and one 15mg of Previcid at night.

Declan's Dr. also suggested going ahead and trying to start him on some solids since he doesn't have any problems with the rice cereal. My fingers are crossed that all will start to help.

JoshuasMom...how much rice ceral were you adding to bottles? Just curious.

Yes, reflux tends to have flare ups, hence the name of "reflux roller coaster". I hope that this is short lived for you. Teething, colds, etc. can also make it worse.

We started out with 1tsp per oz and increased that to 2tsp per oz during his peak. Boy, was that ever a concoction to make!! We had to use the most open nipples then too - in our case, that was the Dr Brown's Y-Cut ones.

We're back down to 1 tsp per oz now and I'm sure the Ped will have us decrease that at his 9mth appt next month.

I've had the best luck with Organic Brown Rice Cereal. It mixes the best, doesn't clump and doesn't seem to make him constipated. You can find it at the natural food stores and I even saw it at Babies R Us recently.

Hope that helps! :)

Don't you feel like you've got a pharmacy going in your house? LoL! That's the way it's felt for us for a while.
Miori's right though, once he's on solids and has been sitting up well for a while it "should" calm down, aside from an occassional flare up. My son spit up all day every day when we did solids (for about 3 months) but with the Prevacid, this USUALLY did not bother him. We went "bib-free" around 9 months which was a great feeling! Prevacid was a miralce for us. He has been on half his dose now for a few weeks and is doing well. He currently only spits up after his whole milk as his body is still adjusting to the switch from breastmilk 2 months ago.
Eventually, the good days will BY FAR outweigh the bad...they should anyway...good luck to you and see ya 'round! ;)

The girls said it... reflux does have it's ups and downs... he could be having a growth spurt, flare with age, teething, sick, nothing at all lol...

My daughter will pretty much stop eating all together for about 3-4 days with a flare but will eventually eat normal again... sometimes she only gets 7 ounces in a day... normally she gets 12-15oz (maybe I should put that in my signature lol I've been writing that a lot lately!). Also like the girls said, it could be need for med increase, or anything... I would give it some time... if it's a flare it will settle itself down - and yes, Sara is right, sooner or later the good do outweigh the bad by far! I never thought that was possible in the beginning but at about 6.5months when K was primarily walking around the house, things got SOOOOO much better in the reflux and puke department!

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks to you all! Dr's don't really seem to sit you down and explain all these things do they? I begin to feel like the biggest pest and crazy mom calling the Dr's office constantly. But I'll gladly endure a little embarassment to make sure my little one feels better.

Just thought I would let you all know...I went by daycare this afternoon at lunch and Declan had had two full 6 oz bottles and was snoozing in the clothes he came in. Eating and not even spitting up! I'm hopful that the extra meds are helping. I'm just really grateful that he is eating again.

THat's great news!!
I thought the same thing of myself calling the doc's office all the time, for everything... I think they're use to it ;) It comes w/the territory ;)
Hope the extra med is helping!

The ladies have said it all.. as well as reflux, that congestion may not have helped and also teething can cause probs with the feeding too. It's so hard to figure out which is which and what is causing the problems!!! Glad he's feeding better for you though.... Hang in there
