Good Morning

Since taking Neocate my 4 1/2 month old now wakes up multiple times during the night. Not a reflux issue as he is fussy but not reflux nutty--but I'm wondering how much Neocate other parents are giving their babies?

He's 14 1/2 pounds and was breastfeed before that so I have no clue what's normal. I don't want to overfeed him because I think that's when he spits up the most. He's having around 28 ounces a day. Does that sound low or right?

Anyonen else on Neocate experience this? By the way, whether I feed him or not in the middle of the night, he still won't go back to sleep until we do the CIO thing after three or four rounds of rocking etc.

Also where do I find out how the point things work that I see by everyone's name? I looked for an intro to the boards thread but couldn't find it. I'm sure it's here!!

thanks!
Up too early again.....Julie

I'm not sure if that is right or not in ounces but I think it is. My 10 week old eats 32 ounces a day, BUT he weighs the same as yours and I don;t have the spit up problem. Weight wise I think you are about right.

I've gotten Mason trained really well to sleep pretty good at night. Has there been any other changes you have made that might keep him up?

One thing about Neocate is it is VERY thin. Do you thicken at all? Maybe it is coming back up a lot from being so thin and waking him up?

For the first 6 months a (normal) baby should be eating 2.5 ounces per pound of weight with a max of 32 ounces a day. So at 14.5 lbs he should be 32oz a day in a perfect world. Not all kids are the same though and some eat MUCH less - my daughter has NEVER eaten more than her high of 20 ounces and she has been growing fine. She should be getting a lot more than she is now, which is about 12-15oz a day right now.

So my suggestion... if he is growing and gaining weight... dont worry about it at ALL. Dont stress out of how much he gets or doesnt... feed him when he is hungry (though dont overfeed) and let him live. LoL

Hope that helps! :)

My eight month old has been on Neocate since he was 2 mos old. He is now 8 mos old and can only take about 4oz of a bottle at a time or he just pukes it up. We also thicken with 2 tablespoons of rice cereal so I'm sure that makes him more full also. We haven't really had any problems with the Neocate. Do you thicken your babies feeds? I would say that 28 oz a day sounds really good. Right now Connor has only been taking in like 18.

Sorry to butt in on your post but Kim (Connor's Mom) has he ever been tested for delayed gastric emptying? When you said he cant take more than 4 oz at a time without puking it up and he only gets 18 oz a day at 8 months--that just sounds like DGE. Sometimes kids with DGE do really well on the available motility meds like erythromycin. It may help him take in more. just thought I would mention it.

Julie--I agree with what everyone else said. If he growing well, he is getting the right amount. My son drinks neocate after being breastfed for 7 months and does the best on it. He was failure to thrive and after starting neocate has found himself back on the chart. We like it!

I wish I was more help, but Evan was 10 mos old when we started Neocate. He takes in about 40ozs a day now and refluxes like crazy when he's laying down still.

Carla... I dont think it's necessarily an emptying issue, always... my daughter MIGHT get 6 ounces in at once but more likely she take 4-5 at a time - she's never taken more than 6 on a really good day. She also only drinks 12-15ounces a day... she's always been this way and I dont think she has emptying issues... and never thought to get her tested.

Anyway, just mentioning that it might just be the way he eats and not dge.

Thanks to you all! I will try to stop worrying about it and let him eat what he wants. I actually have been thinking that he might be waking up at night because he's having BETTER days. He used to be so exhausted from crying all day that he's sleep like a rock.

Thanks again!
Julie

As I said, Mason is 10 weeks now and eating 32 ounces a day. I was feeding him five 6 ounce bottles per day with one of them in the middle of the night.

The GI had us change his feeds to four 8 ounce bottles during the day and not feed him at night. As soon as I did that he woke halfway through the first night and cried for an hour. I just peeked on him every 15 minutes to make sure he was okay but didn't pick him up. After that he has slept through every night. Maybe if you feed him the same amount but give it all during the day he will sleep better as well?

I think you're just right with the ounces he is getting. Like Michele said... feed him when he's hungry and let him live.

Lauren was on Neocate and did very well on it. And she was the Puke Princess, seriously!! Neocate and Zantac are the only things that helped her. We also thickened
