Although Emily is refusing fluids, this did not stop her from grabbing my tootsie pop and cramming it in her mouth. I thought it was cute so I let her have for a few minutes. Of course she was covered in a sticky mess so I stuck her in the tub. When I washed her, all around her mouth was covered in welts!!!!!!!! I looked at the ingredients...soybean oil, skim milk, whey, soy lecithin. It never dawned on me. I assume the milk suff is in the center tootsie roll, which wasn't exposed yet, but I guess it could get contaminated. UGH!!!!!!!!

Ouch! Poor Emily! Its amazing just how many foods contain milk and soy, isn't it? Have the welts disappeared? I hope she feels better soon!

It's amazing how many foods contain soy/dairy. Although the soybean oil and soy lecithin should be fine since they are fats.

For MOST people, soy oil and lecithin are not considered an allergen because they are fats, but for those very allergic they can cause some reactions. Our GI said Emily was one of the few that would likely react to them so avoid them. I just never dreamed that they would be in a sucker. UGH! Thankfully, the welts are not raised anymore, and there is just a little redness left around her mouth and on her belly where she slobbered the sucker stuff down onto her belly.

yes milk seems to be in everything when you are trying to avoid it!! Does she have an epi pen? We were given one and told to use it anytime alexys gets hives around her mouth, they can get them in the throat and you dont even know it until its too late....i have never had to use it yet and hope i dont have to...although she has gotten hives a few times bad on her face from hidden milk i was too chicken to stick her with it since she seemed okay.

No, no epi-pen for her. Abby has one though. I would be to scared to stick her too, unless she was having trouble breathing or somthing. Scary huh? She is only 4 months, but my ped is already talking about referring her to an allergist. She is waiting on her scope biopsies. I am wondering if this kid is going to be drinking neocate from a cup at her high school graduation.
