Are you referring to the belsy or tupet or Thai fundo ??? I do know that research is showing that the Thai Fundoplication has the least amount of post-op problems and has the longest positive outcome then any other of the Nissen procedures.

probably another way of saying the tupet or thai. I have heard of half wraps, but I have also heard that it comes with the risk of refluxing through it. We asked the surgeon about it but I guess most of them don't do it. What info did you recieve about this??? Let me know what you find out!

Just so you ladies know--it's a Thal, not thai. Just incase someone wants to look it up--having the correct spelling is important!

I don't know if it's the same but I would love to know. We looked into this before Chelsea's first fundo and it sounded great to us. We spoke to a surgeon in Kansas City Missouri and Children's Mercy Hospital that took over the program that another doctor started there with performing the Thals. Apparently they had remarkable results and when I interviewed our surgeon here and another--most surgeones throughout the country dont agree with the Thal and consider the nissen the gold standard because they know more about the complications with a Nissen and how to treat them because they have been doing them for so long.

Kind of a crappy reason if you ask me, however I can see their side to it--one reaosn why we did the nissen. The biggest argument here against it is that if a child is refluxing badly enough to need surgery you need to perform a wrap that is going to keep acid and food in the stomach. If they can burp and vomit past a Thal (which they can) how would they not reflux. However if they cannot vomit and burp, besides being extremely uncomfortable, they retch instead and eventually retch through the nissen so what good is that. I can see both sides of the extreme, I really conisder it to be a less than perfect surgery.

If you want to look up articles the doctor there that kind of pioneered the Thal is Dr. Ashcraft--he has a lot of journal articles about why he thinks the thal is better than the Nissen. Long story short I think both sides have convinvcing arguments. It is a tough call if given the choice. Since most surgeons are very specific about which they will do--it kind of makes your choice for you unless you were like us and could stay in your home town and do a nissen or fly to missouri from cal to do a thal---we stayed in our home town!

Okay after researching too much again...
Thal is 180 degrees.
Tupet is 270 degrees.

After my nightmares last night I'm against surgery again.

For the best information on these procedures search " sages " you can add in nissen or fundoplication to that and get some great articles pointing out that the THAL procedure has had the BEST outcome over a 10 year period with less than 7% having complications or return of reflux. Overseas in all of the Asian countries the THAL is the only procedure performed now due to the findings !!! Sorry for the mis-spelling Carla !!!

Thanks for that info Katy---if all the statistics show that the Thal has the best outcome, why in the world do they insist on the Nissen out here????!!!!

This is all new data frm the last 18months. The US is usually one of the last ones to implement new medical standards and procedures.

Dr. Atkinson said the same thing. They do the Nissen because they know more about it and if you are going to do it you might as well go all the way, I guess literally LOL. 360....

Thanks for the info, Carla  I must admit, I copied Katys spelling cause I'm lazy HeHe She and I are sleep deprived.
