My son Tlyer had an NG tube placed last night. He did great with it. I
got the feeding started with no problems. He is to have a continous
feeding of 30 ML per hour for 10 hours. After an hour he started to
scream:-( He cryed from 9 pm to 1230 am When he gave in! He slept till
130 am when he woke again screaming. I tried to feed him a bottle he
took 1/2 oz and started screaming again. After a few minutes of that
he started to vomited, I than stopped the feeding and un hooked him.
He than took about 30 minutes to calm down and fall back to sleep. He
is very fussy today and has only taken 6oz from a bottle, and that has
been a fight just to get that into him. Does anyone have any advice
for me? Is this normal for him to react like this or could something
be wrong? I have a Dr's appt with another ped today to check him out
and see how he is doing. I just hope this is not how it is going to be
every night, I am not sure I can handle that. Thanks for any advice!

Hugs~

Wow, we never had such a reaction while using an NG tube with Daniel. Sure, getting it in was a pain, and he'd often pull it out or puke it up, but we never dealt with outright screaming. Do you think the feed was just too much (like maybe you need to slow it down) so he was refluxing more than usual? You might have to play with the rate since you're feeding him overnight and therefore he's lying down. I hope things start going better!

That is what the feeding group thought too was the rate. I would say that his reflux was worse. But even now that he is not being feed he is still crying and arching his back:( he hasn't slept much today either.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It sounds a lot like what we are going through with Allie. She chokes herself and vomits on her tube (she threw up the tube this morning). She also pulls it out and it has to go right back in and I hate doing that to her. She does not sleep at all when the NG tube is in (after all, would you if there was a tube down your throat?). I hate our NG tube and it makes her bottle aversion worse than it was before it went in. The only thing it does do is get her the calories she needs. We found that giving 3 oz every 3 hours or something like that was better than the nighttime continuous feed. Sometimes you have to play around with that.

Also, what size NG tube do you have? We switched from an 8 french to a 5 french and it made a big difference in Allie's comfort levels. We had to get the doc to write a new prescription for the new size and then give that to the med supply company.

I hope this is helpful to you. Email me if you have any more questions.

Roni~ He has had a scope and upper GI done both came out fine. I asked about Mobility and the Dr said the Stuff from the Upper GI moved through quickly that he didn't feel mobility was an issues. He is on Previacid 15 MG tablet 3/4 tablet in AM and 1/2 tablet in PM. He goes in Monday for a cat scan.

We dropped the feeding in half 15 ML per hour and that seemed to do better on it he is still waking 2-3 x a night to eat 1 oz and go back to sleep. All in all he is getting less formula now per day than before he had the NG tube :-( Yes he is on a 8 French I will ask today if they can order a 5 French. Last night I tried to raise the feeding to 20 ML per hour and again he was fine for a few hours and than began to scream :-( At this point I am ?ing my self and if this is really the right thing for him. Last ngiht he did take one 2 oz bottle and than 1 1oz bottle and was up at 6 am. I really just want my happy little man back! He is not sleeping durning the day nor is he really playing. He now cried if I put him down and go to do something. I am just having a hard time with this choice! Thanks
