View Full Version : What to feed kids with MSPI ConnorsMommy 03-26-2006, 09:51 PM What kind of table foods are safe for kids with MSPI? Leigh 03-26-2006, 09:58 PM Here is a sticky that we have thanks to Jennifer (thepeach). I am going to move this thread over to the allergy forum as it may get better responses there even though this is an intolerance. Amanda will likely have some suggestions as well. http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8753 EmmasMommy 03-26-2006, 10:11 PM It is easier to make our food MSP-free as well so I don't have to make two meals all the time. We use rice milk and Fleishmann's Light Margarine (in the tub only - has a blue lid) as substitutes. I check a lot of labels, but as long as I'm making things from scratch (and using those two instead of real milk and butter) the food turns out pretty good! I just make my recipes and substitute the real thing with her MSP-free alternatives. Emma's favorites are: Instant Oatmeal Grits - Emma loves them... Macaroni, cut-up spaghetti, or small shells w/her margarine Lipton's Kosher Noodle Soup Hard-boiled eggs (Connor's too young for the whites though) Rice Bread or I make homemade bread in the bread machine Bisquick Rolls with Cinnamon and her margarine Any vegetable or fruit - except those that make her reflux worse like oranges and tomatoes...I just cook and mash up, or cube and serve. She's also taking stage 2 and 3 vegies/fruits babyfood now. Banana bread - homemade Stir-fry (vegies and chicken chopped up) Chicken (diced) that's been roasted in olive oil w/vegies Bisquick pancakes and waffles Instant mashed potatoes w/her margarine Gerber puffs Alphabits cereal w/no sugar - new!!!! Tastes like Cheerios but dissolves better in their mouth Rice chex I also go to the local health food store to pick up crackers and snacky things that are MSP-free. Like tonight...we had spaghetti, garlic bread, and salad. Emma had 4 oz. formula, cut-up spaghetti w/her margarine, I made her rice bread - toasted - with her margarine melted w/a dash of garlic powder, and squash babyfood. CadysMommy 03-26-2006, 10:21 PM Veggies and fruits are safe. We use a lot of canned fruits and veggies, and chop them up for Cady. We also do rice and pastas either with her Smart Balance Light butter w/salt & pepper OR we cook up veggies and chicken in olive oil and mix that in with the rice and pasta. She loves bisquick pancakes made with her safe butter and rice milk. Oh, this is her absolute fave...toast w/safe butter cinnamon & sugar, cut up into tiny pieces. There are a lot of things you can do, you just have to be creative. Jennifer gave me a lot of ideas, so make sure you visit that sticky that Leigh mentioned. sixdogssixcats 03-26-2006, 10:22 PM OMG, Amanda! I am so impressed!! Catherine had 4-5 tiny bites of stage 3 lasagna before clamming up and pitching a fit to get down tonight. I tried to get her to try a pinto bean at a b-day party yesterday as she was sitting with a 12mo and an 8mo who were eating them. She clamped her jaws shut and turned her head away from me. So much for peer pressure! :rolling: Little stinker! EmmasMommy 03-26-2006, 10:29 PM OMG, Amanda! I am so impressed!! Thanks. :hello2: Emma's a very adventurous eater (she'll eat about anything) but doesn't eat much of it. In time, I guess.... Leigh 03-26-2006, 10:32 PM I knew I could count on you ladies to fill in this thread! I just avoid soy and milk (and peanuts, and corn, and... and... and...) so I have not enough information for what would be good for this age group and just soy and milk free as we avoid corn as well. Indeed, I am impressed. ConnorsMommy 03-27-2006, 01:26 PM Thanks so much evryone for the great ideas! I am not creative in the kitchen at all (just ask my DH )(LOL) OwensMom 03-27-2006, 02:50 PM We also avoid all dairy/soy products and I make a lot of food from scratch. Owen loves the instant oatmeal and grits as well. I also go to the german health food store for cookies, crackers and things that are MSP-free. Since I still nurse Owen I'm on the same diet and we use rice milk for the cereal in the morning, I also found a pancake mix that we can use, Buckwheat pancake mix, it's actually yummy. Any fruit and veggies are fine as long as he can tolerate them. They have enriched rice milk vanilla here and Owen loves it, and I get dairy-/soy-free margarine from the german store over here and use it in recipes. Pasta is a big hit over here too, he isn't to fond about rice though. I mix the pasta with the margarine and add some of the stage 2 veggies or fruits and he loves it. EmmasMommy 03-27-2006, 03:02 PM I mix the pasta with the margarine and add some of the stage 2 veggies or fruits and he loves it. That's a good idea, Melanie...thanks! :hello2: OwensMom 03-27-2006, 03:22 PM No problem Amanda. It's always nice to see what others feed their little ones gives you some new ideas. I sometimes run out of them too and don't know what to feed him anymore. I will try and feed him carrots again tomorrow and see if he can tolerate them now, he usually gets a horrible diaper rash from them. |
