View Full Version : scared to start solids again
ConnorsMommy 03-26-2006, 09:48 PM I stopped giving Connor solids a week ago and he has been the happiest baby. I am supposed to start trying them again tomorrow and I am so scared. He has been the happiest baby, smiling all day long laughing and playing happily. I don't want to go back to where we were. I know he can't live on formula alone and that he needs solids but what if he goes back to screaming all the time and being miserable? Do any gerdlings do better on table food than baby food? I'm wondering if it's so thin that he just Refluxes it up. Also, how much solids should I give him? I was giving him a whole jar of stage 1 and then he would drink a 3 oz bottle.
Emily M 03-26-2006, 10:05 PM Kim~ someone on here wrote that they were told by a doctor that gerdlings do better on table food than baby food. I don't know why, but I hope that he does well for you. I'm sure that it is scarey. I know that when we have a really good day, I try to remember EXACTLY what I did, so that I can duplicate it!
Do you know for sure what really bothered him?? Maybe start w/something like squash or sweetpotatoes. Didn't you say that apples and pears bothered him?
What about carrots?
Good luck {{hugs}}
Leigh 03-26-2006, 10:56 PM Connor is 8 months old, correct? I would try some of the baby foods but he should be into finger foods then as well. It has been awhile since we have been there and Iain skipped all solids, so what do I know?!
It is worth a try again anyway. You will never know unless you try, but keep in mind that the fluid intake must be altered as well or you may derail solids totally. If he prefers finger foods then let him go for it. Little bits at a time (same for solids like purees) and let him increase at his own pace.
Solids can aggravate reflux in terms of increasing his caloric intake and overall amount of food. Iain refluxed like mad the more he intook. He still does it complete with backarching if and when he increases again. Having said that, if he is on good reflux meds then he will need to increase his solids intake and in time his body will adjust.
Let us know how it goes. Rome was not built in a day so whatever you can do is fine, just do not fret about it and take "baby steps".
KaitlynsMom 03-27-2006, 09:16 AM My daughter didnt do horrible on baby food (other than puking it up) but she started on table food at 7 months and has only had that since... she does great!
Minnie 03-27-2006, 09:31 AM Solids were so hard to get going, I don't blame you at all for being scared. Every time I gave him anything new... URGH!
Anyway,
Eric did better when the food was thicker, but not lumpy. Like when I mashed my own food it was too lumpy and made him choke and gag, but when I made the puree thicker he did really well. Kinda like the consistency of the babyfood bananas worked best for Eric. (too bad he couldn't have bananas, so I could keep the constipation under control. LOL)
I saw major improvements when we went to more table foods, but it took him a while to be completely ready for them. He didn't chew for a long time and would just learn to swallow foods whole. He just recently (within the past 2 months) started biting and chewing well.
I did give him table foods though. I just cut things up really tiny for him.
I started making more of my own baby food for him too. I made the purees with less water than normal is all. Sometimes I added a little cereal to the bought baby food too.
Good Luck!
I hope the whole food thing goes a ton better this time around, and you find at least 3 "I know this is safe" foods that you can count on. Once I got to this point things got a little easier, because I could always go back to those "safe" foods if things got bad or really confusing.
Eliana's Mommy 03-27-2006, 09:40 AM don't be scared, just start slow and don't let him see you are scared ... act carefree like it's no big deal
and YES Eliana does WAY better on table foods then baby food
Emily M 03-27-2006, 08:38 PM How did he do today Kim? did you take the plunge???
ConnorsMommy 03-27-2006, 08:50 PM I chickened out:doh: He kept gagging on his first bottle this morning and only took 2 1/2 oz. So I decided to wait.
OwensMom 03-28-2006, 12:13 AM I totally understand you, since Owen reacted to almost anything we gave him too. He still doesn't tolerate too many things but at least we have some foods that are safe to give him. I would take small steps and give him a little bit at a time and see how he does, after he does well for a while you can increase the intake. Squash worked well for Owen, carrots was a big "no, no" but I will try them again today and see how he does.
I hope that you will find some foods that he can enjoy without being in pain.
Emily M 03-28-2006, 07:53 AM I chickened out:doh: He kept gagging on his first bottle this morning and only took 2 1/2 oz. So I decided to wait.
I don't blame you Kim. You have plenty of time.
opus2828 03-28-2006, 08:32 PM Hi. My Samuel cannot have his bottle and solids together or it all comes up. I've found that giving him the solids about an hour before his bottle seems to work best. Sometimes I do feel like I am feeding him all day long but most of it is staying down. The only meal I give him a bottle with is his breakfast because he doesn't really eat much for that one anyway. So, maybe you could try giving the solids an hour before the bottle. As for table foods, we are just starting a little of them and he seems to react the same. Cheerios are okay and apple dices go down pretty easy. And most importantly, stay down! Good luck.
Cam's sahm 03-29-2006, 11:42 PM Hi, I'm new....I've tried to give Cameron gerber 1st foods a week ago and although she did well on the tounge thing but we had a miserable night. I gave her pears today and she was fussy all evening until she spit up. 8 hours after eating it. She has silent reflux and she used to scream as if she were on fire for hours until prevacid. Now it's off and on. Thanks for the info about 1st foods being a bit rough on our little gerdies. She went to bed with no problem tonight. I'm just glad she got out what she had to get out. Hmmmm tough huh. 1st time mom...I thought it was going to go as planned. Oh well....What are table foods? like finger foods?
ConnorsMommy 03-30-2006, 09:42 AM Hi Ginette, table foods are finger foods. I thought about trying them with Connor since the whole stage 1 purees hasn't gone over so well! I havn't worked up the nerve to try again although I know I need to since he's 8 mos old. I'm so glad you found our site:D Also glad that your little one did better last night!
