View Full Version : He's coughing again
ConnorsMommy 03-26-2006, 09:29 PM Connor's coughing has been under control for several months since starting him on Pulmicort. Now all of the sudden he is coughing again. I don't know if it's Reflux related or allergies? We did just paint the house and when we moved things there was a ton of dust behind them. Even the Cat has been sneezing.
sixdogssixcats 03-26-2006, 09:50 PM Give it a couple of days, Kim. It could very well be dust.
menfusse 03-26-2006, 09:53 PM Could be the dust and paint. It's hard to know with these kids isn't it? I wanted to ask you about the cough. Emily has always had a bit of a cough over the past couple of weeks it has gotten more frequent. She doesn't have a cold and her lungs are always clear. Abby has asthma, but she did have any trouble until around 7 months. Did Connor wheeze, or just the cough? I am not sure if this is reflux or beginning signs of asthma or what. How did Conner's start? Sorry to hijak your thread.
ConnorsMommy 03-26-2006, 10:01 PM That's ok Melissa:D Connor's cough started when he was about a week old. It's a very dry sounding cough and he does it several times a day. He also use to wheeze a lot. Actually it was more of a rattly noise. The Dr. said that it sounded more like it was coming from his throat than his chest. His wheezing went away a few months ago. He has been on Pulmicort for several months and it has made a big difference.
menfusse 03-26-2006, 10:05 PM Emily has that rattle too. It sounds like a wheeze, then the dr. says she is clear and that it is probably from her throat. She has coughed from about 5 days old. I always associated it with reflux, but it is so much more frequent now, several times a day. I wonder if I should ask the ped for a trial run of pulmicort. It's not like I would need the script...Abby has it stock piled. What age did Conner start pulmicort?
ConnorsMommy 03-26-2006, 10:14 PM I think he started at about 4 1/2 to 5 months old. I was hesitant because I thought it was from the Reflux but he kept getting sick and it would go straight to his chest so I decided to try it and it has made a huge difference! You may want to ask your Ped because Emily would probably be on a lower dose than Abby:D It's worth a try.
menfusse 03-26-2006, 10:23 PM Oh yeah, I would definantly run it by the ped first. I just can't help thinking this is leading to asthma, especially given Abby's history. I was an astmatic kid too. I had her at the peds last week for her nose bleeds and she said her mucous membrans were very pale and her little nose looked like a kid who had allergy troubles for years. I guess I should run it by her. I don't want to lay it off on the reflux if it could be asthma related. Thanks for letting me in on your thread. LOL!
ConnorsMommy 03-26-2006, 10:28 PM I agree Melissa especially if you and Abby both have Asthma theres a good chance that Emily could. Keep me posted! Emily's symptoms sound just like Connor's did except he didn't have nose bleeds.
Leigh 03-26-2006, 10:48 PM Iain has asthma with the GERD connection. Curran has been called asthmatic, but he really is not. He just goes chesty with things.
I would give it a few days to see if it settles down. Clean out the furnace filters and give the vents a good clean and that could help too. It also could be an increase in the pulmicort is in order. I do not know the drug as we have not used it though. When Iain is having bouts we have the chance to switch from two different flovent doses depending on his severity.
sixdogssixcats 03-26-2006, 11:09 PM What dosage of Pulmicort is Connor on? The ampules only come in two sizes, and one is double the other. Catherine is on 0.25mg/2ml, which is the lesser dose, twice a day. This is the recommended dosage unless the child is transitioning from regular use of oral corticosteroids (like orapred).
scarlet 03-27-2006, 07:50 AM Kim I sort of remember you saying that Connor had caught Mikes cold? Well during illness asthma preventers need to be increased, talk to your doctor. As soon as I see a cold or something in my kids we double the dose until at least a week after all symptoms have cleared.
Otherwise it may be from the switch over from flovent to pulmicourt, and not having enough time to get in the system.
ConnorsMommy 03-27-2006, 08:56 AM Thanks Rachel, He never actually caught the cold (knock on wood) I thought for sure he was because of all the coughing and gagging but so far he just has a cough. I will call his Pulminologist and ask about giving Pulmicort 2 times a day instead of 1
scarlet 04-02-2006, 06:58 AM Kim how is his coughing now... did it get sorted?
ConnorsMommy 04-02-2006, 12:42 PM Rachel, he's actually been doing better the past few days! I think he just wasn't getting enough medicine because he kept pulling the mask off. Now I've been giving it to him with the mouth nozzle part and he actually puts his mouth around it and sucks on it. Hope it keeps working as it's much easier than trying to fight him:D Thanks for asking!
