Hi ladies

For those avoiding soy...do you give your baby foods with soy lecthin(sp?) or partially hydrogenated soy oil?
I was told by our GI, and read MOST babies/kids with a soy allergy can handle certain soy deriv.....
I've been giving zach Newmans fig newtons for a while and he was doing fine...
I added in 2 other foods with soy deriv and he was a mess...
So, I am trying to figure out if it has to do with the amount of the product he eats or the type of soy deriv?

Thanks,Kim

Maybe he can handle a little soy, but not be overloaded with it. When he gets more in his system it hurts him.
Just a thought!

soy lec and soy oil are fats , not the proteins which cause the reaction, and should be okay. Some kids react but according to my GI they shouldnt.

Cady is intolerant to soy, not allergic, but I haven't noticed her having any reaction to those derivatives. Only straight soy, soy milk for example, will cause her to vomit. Other than that, she's good with soy present in foods.

Emma can handle soy lecithin (sp?) and soy oil just fine. I try to buy foods without any soy at all, but those two don't seem to bother her. Amy's right. They're fats, not proteins.

I think it depends on wether you are dealing with an allergy or intolerance. Emily is allergic to soy, and our GI told us to avoid lecithin and oil until she turns one and then we will challenge her. The GI said that if is were just intolerance, then they shouldn't bother her. I asked about the protein vs. fat thing, and he said it is possible with a true allergy to react to fats too, especially with soy. I don't know why especially soy...that is just what he said.

Thanks ladies

I wasn't sure if there was a difference between soybean oil or partially hydrog.soybean oil...but I guess no, now that I understand the fat vs protein
Zach alsorecentlyhad chocolate ricemilk...what a mess...I didn't know kids who are avoiding soy should avoid carob
ugh!

my dd reacts the same to any soy product. i think (& this is just a guess) that 90-some % don't react, but a few do. it's the human body & so of course there will be some variation.

I, too was told that soy lecitin and oil were okay; however, B always reacted to those. We found out today at the allergist that she tests positive for the soy allergy. (We'll confirm it next week).

Same as the others said--the intolerance is usually to the protein, not the fats; however, if Zach is reacting, keep careful notes of what causes it to see if there might be something more to his sensitivity.

BTW--thanks for the heads-up about carob!
