Just wondering if there is anyone out there that had posivtive results from an open fundo without many if any post op complications? My dd is having it in a week and I am wondering if maybe I am being to negative that the recovery is going to be horrible since she is 2.

I have three kids that have had fundos. I will tell you that my dd was the only one that did really well with her outcome. She had no post op complications or problems and recovered very quickly.

I do wish the best for you and hope that things go well.

Sam had an open fundo last summer and recovered well. His complications were related to other medical issues. I wish you the best of luck, keep us posted.
Have you talked to the doc about pain control for the first few days??? Sam had an epidural for the first 3 days and it seemed to work very well for him.

I wish you guys the best, please keep us updated. Make sure you get good pain medication. Our nurse thought our son didn't need morphine and just needed the other one, I believe they give two, and he suffered until the next nurse came, I was really ticked when the next nurse came and gave him some because it made such a difference in the pain he was feeling. And, helped him sleep through the worst part of it.

Please update us when you can!

The surgeon told us that he would like to keep an epidural in for 2 days at first and then wean her off the morphine but he said he is not going to let her be in any pain and also he said there was a pain mgmnt team that will be in to see her 3 times/day and also for us to vocalize our concerns if she is having discomfort. I felt pretty good about the pain control thing at least it does not sound like I will have to beg. I think having to much time before this procedure is making us more nutty since we can dwell on our decision.

We knew about 2 months ahead, it killed us! It was awful waiting, you have too much time to think the worst and have second thoughts.

I am glad they have a plan for the pain. That should be really reassuring for you. I am sure it will go much better than you expect, these little guys recover so fast, they are so much tougher than us, I think!

Please continue to keep us updated and let us know of any more Qs you have. The toughest part of the surgery for us, aside from the waiting, was when you get there and they give them what they need to knock them out and they take them or you have to walk away. That is the hardest part, we had to do both because our son wouldn't drink the stuff they gave him to knock him out, so he was half knocked out, so we ended up carrying him to the operating room ....... that was awful. But, the rest went much better than I thought it would.

Our son had an open fundo when he was five months old. He was on morphine for the first 2 days, I think and then just Tylenol as needed. He recovered very quickly. He hasn't had any complications from the operation itself. Erin is right, the worst part is when they take him (her in your case) away from you. I also had a really hard time going into the recovery room when he first came out of surgery because he seemed so small and fragile (he was/is) and he was drugged and you could tell he felt weird. I think all of us would rather go through it ourselves than have our children have to deal with it. Hang in there! Good luck and keep us posted on how things go.
