View Full Version : there's a new quack in town

Jackson had his appt. w/the allergist today.
First of all, we live in a small town, I decided to see one here, as I didn't feel like driving **again** to another doctor. I already go see 4 in St louis as it is and it is about 45 min. from me. Anyway, I should have known better.
He listened to my schpeel. (sp?) and then asked me a few questiong:
does he cough?
does he wheeze?
Is he congested?
Do you think that he is pale?
Do you think that he has dark circles?

My main reason was because I want to find out NOW if we are going to have an issue w/milk, soy, etc. etc. Well, he basically told me that Jackson is a very allergic child. He has all of the symptoms of "environmental allergies". Ok........ so, now what???? He examined him, he said that his ears looked red, his glands in his neck were swollen, his eyes were irritated, allergic shiners, atopic dermatitis on his cheeks, his nose looked irritated. " Some of this, yeah, I realized. Everyone else thought that i was bonkers. But, I have always thought that all 3 of my kids have dark circles under their eyes and looked pale. Jackson has always **since birth** been congested, I chalked it up to acid reflux.
He told me that food testing is not conclusive at all. It doesn't matter how old.  **That was my reason for going**
I asked him if he thought that milk was an issue? No, he said, it iis more symptomatic of upper GI issues.
 :smt108 **Allergies to milk, does it not exhibit runny nose, stuffy nose, watery eyes, plus other signs. **
He thinks that Jackson is totally just environmentally allergic. He said that we could put him on a nebulizer. **He is not that bad** or he could give us an antihistamine. **which I had him do** but basically he said that there was nothing we could do at this point, he is too young.
**sigh**:banghead:
Am I crazy for wanting to know if my child is going to be allergic to things like milk, soy, peanuts, corn, etc. etc.???? I know that sometimes, it is trial and error, but can't you at least get a starting point?
I'm going to talk to my ped. about the whole thing. See what he thinks. Probably not much about this quack. On top of being a quack, he looked like he had wooden teeth! They were so yellow! He needs to go to the dentist! LOL:hmph:

Environmental allergies Hey??

Talk to the ped and see what they say...That would probably be your best bet! Sorry you didn't get much out of that appointment:) Hopefully you'll have some answers soon!!

who DOESN'T have environmental allergies???!!!!

You know that's the exact same freaking schpeel I got from Cady's ped and the dermatologist that her outward symptoms of eczema, stuffy nose, cough, and ear infections were definitely not from a food allergy when I asked them...but, the GI took one look at Cady and said milk allergy. Ever since we took milk out of her diet, her skin is clearer, she doesn't have a gunky nose and she seems overall just healthier. It hasn't completely cured her eczema, though, which I'll bring up to the GI who might refer us to an allergist, but taking her off of milk has made a big difference in those physical symtoms. So, I agree...that guy's a quack as it could all be related to food allergies or it could not, you never really know...lots of times with little ones all doctors can really do is take educated guesses. Some educated guesses just seem less...well, educated. What does the GI think?

I don't know what the GI thinks, but I will definetly bring this up to him next week. We have an appt. on Thursday.
I agree, less than educated guess! LOL:wink:

Sorry to hear he's a quack. I agree with Judy, I'd bring this up with the ped GI.

:rolling: Emily you are too funny! Thanks for the laugh! Sorry the allergist was a quack! I know what you mean about wanting to know if Jackson has any allergies! I hate trying to figure out if a new food is the culprit of symptoms or something else! It drives me crazy! Hopefully your GI will be more help! We go to ours tomorrow! It's sad, I get so excited to see them you would think I was going for a day at the spa or something(LOL)

Ummmm....what kind of allergist says that food allergies don't cause respiratory symptoms? I guess one with wooden teeth. LOL!! Too funny!

Food allergies can most DEFINATELY cause respiratory symptoms. I would defiantely talk to the ped. The dr. was right about the inaccuracy of the tests, especally that young. If it were me, I would just take milk and soy away or whatever else you are worried about. If his symptoms clear, then add one thing back at a time for a couple of weeks until the symptoms come back and there you go. Is he getting muc in the way of solids yet that would have any of these things in them? It is a toughy when they are so young.

Melissa~ the milk that he is getting is in his formula. He is on Nutramigen **which I know is broken down** but I still see these symtpoms and he broke out w/ a lotion that had soy in it the other day. I am wondering if we need to go to Neocate formula. He refuses to eat most of the time.
Not alot of solids that are giving him problems yet.

Emily, how frustrating. As I said before I went to the ped today to get a referral o the allergist today and he said all the things your Dr said. It could have been rehearsed! So in the end he said we didn't need to go cause nothing could be done yet, so at least I didn't have to go to the allergist.

I don't think your nuts to want to know if he is allergic to things. It is dangerous to 'try thinns' not to mention time consuming! Parkers 18months and we are nowhere on the list of foods he can and cant eat for sure.

BTW I laugh all the time at some posts LOL means I really did LOL!

Hi

Ok Ok......I'm going to go against the grain here and maybe even (to some degree) agree with your QUACK
Let me just say I have 2 refluxers with possible FA's and my 2.5yr old def has seasonal allergies (he is on meds...DH has awful allergis and is on meds year round....anthi, inhalers, nose spray etc etc)
We have been to 7 GI's and 3 ped allergist..I also was DYING for concrete answers...some sort of help in figuring this all out
I was told by ALLLLLL of them that allergy testing is not 100% and the best way to determine allergies is trial and error
I had my 2.5 yr old skin tested 2x and we got different answers each time...i won't put him through a blood test (as I know many many moms who's kids have serious milk allergies that tested NEGATIVE or even had endo's which did not indicate an allergy)

Soooooooo, I had a long night so be gentle, and you are all probably laughing at me right now :)
BUT to some degree I see what these Dr are saying and bottom line..they don't know!!!!
I think we expect Dr (this is how I felt) that they could examine my child and listen to his problems and at least try and fix it, come up with an educated guess maybe (they did go to medical school, right??)..tell me exactly what to avoid...what to do..something...anything?
I really don't know why I went to each Dr visit.....as I was disappointed each time....
After seeing 3 ped allergist and still having nothing to chew on really made me loose faith in Dr

Again, i hope this made sense as I had a god awful night
Good Luck.

No, I'm not laughing at you! LOL I agree. About the testing. But, I have read that **I think** that milk allergies do exhibit respiratory symptoms??!! He told me no, absolutely not. Hmm.... what do you think.
I think that I'm just going to give up and go with the flow! **sigh** tired of being frustrated!

Hi

I def don't agree about what he said in regards to symptoms...again, I think they just don't know!
I'm sure kids that react to dairy could react in a zillion different ways....how do they know that they will only react a certain way...CRUD?
I can tell you based on MY experience when my ds was exposed to dairy he was fussy, had a rash, blood in his stool and def reflux flare up (for lots of us reflux flare up equals congestion)
I've also been told and read that at such a young age they CAN NOT have seasonal allergies as they haven't been exposed enough
Ugh!
I can tell you adding allergy meds along with reflux meds has helped my son a great deal...he is happier, eats better etc etc

let me know if I could confuse you anymore :0

Thanks! LOL about confusing me more!
The funny thing is, he really didn't even suggest an allergy medication. Just an anihistamine. **scratching head**
And, he has been like this since birth, so who the heck knows. Surely not the doc.! LOL
