Whoops, I posted this in feeding, but it probably belongs here...sorry.
"It's very much looking like soy formula is causing spit ups. Would this mean he has a problem with soy (intolerance/allergy) or just be reflux related? (He's mostly breastfed and we don't really see spit up when he's only nursing.)"

Is he intollerant to milk? Usually the ped. told me that intollerant to milk, intollerant to soy.
Any other symptoms? Crying while he eats, or pulling his legs in like it hurts?
I don't know. We tried soy, but at that time, his reflux was not diagnosed, so it was horrible. I don't know if ours was the soy or a comb. of both.
We went straight to the hypo. formula and he has done well on that.
If he isn't milk intollerant, maybe try "Gentlease" it is broken down, kind of like Nutramigen, but not as expensive.

Can you stick to stricly BM??
Usually milk/soy come hand in hand, what did your ped say?
Good Luck!

I'm not sure if he has problems with milk, but early on it crossed my mind. So, I greatly reduced my dairy intake and stoppped drinking milk completely.
We often have nursing issues, pulling off or refusing...along with crying or screaming. He also has redness around his rear end. It's pretty much there all the time, but I think it might be better/worse sometimes. I think it's an allergy ring, but I'm not positive.
He's only seen his real pedi twice (when in the hospital and for his two week check), she wouldn't see us because we were 15 min late to his two month (appt was at 7:45am, but have two other kids to get to school) and then she went on vacation. I have taken him to the er twice and my old pedi once (who put him on Zantac). He doesn't see his pedi until the 22nd. I might switch doctors because it takes one to two months to get an appointment with her, even though she knows we're having problems..:banghead:

We are intolerant to milk. Which means my kids can't tolerate cows milk proteins. They come out in an instant rassh. They are able to have cheese and yogurt in small doses with no reaction. This is because they are processed and the proteins are smaller and therefore better tolerated.
We use goats milk now for the boys and they are good!

Milk Soy Protein Intolerence or MSPI can cause reflux symptoms. If you need to suppliment ask the doctor about trying a hypo-allergenic formula ( ie. Nutramigen)- these have lik proteins that are broken down so small that many babies can tolerate them. But if you don't need to supplement try avoiding the soy formula and if his reactions decrease he probably is MSPI. If the reactions do not disappear completely you may need to eliminate all traces of milk and soy from your diet.

His doctor is going to do a blood test for allergies next week. I know for milk and wheat...but I hope soy is included. Does anyone know the accuracy of this test?

Allergy testing of any kind is notoriously unreliable in children under 4 as their allergies/sensitivities can change with the day of the week. My daughter was RAST tested (blood test) for everything under the sun at 7mo and the results were negative to everything. She clearly has some allergies. Good luck with your test!

I was afraid of that.
Thanks.
