View Full Version : Noah's rash is back--he hasn't eaten solids in 8 days...
Noah's Mom 03-15-2006, 10:30 PM This afternoon, I noticed Noah's right cheek was splotchy, just like the beginning of a mild reaction. Then, it brightened a bit. THEN, I noticed a good size red pimple-like bump on his jaw area. I was mortified! I thought dh must have fed him something while I wasn't looking. Nope. Dh is "not that stupid" according to him, lol. I didn't have class today, so Noah was with me all day. We only left the house once, and Noah and dh stayed in the car and watched Baby E. while I went to my doctor's appointment. So, I was stumped. Noah has NOT ONCE had the rash without solids. NOT ONCE. Well, he has gotten the blotchiness from Alimentum a few times, but it faded immediately. Nothing like this, though.
AND THEN...*light bulb flashing over my head* I remembered the allergy testing yesterday! Could this have caused the rash? Why? I don't get it? It didn't cause a reaction on his back!??!? Could Noah's intolerance have been affected by the rash? This is too wierd.
I'm going to call his allergist first thing in the morning.
LaurensMommy 03-15-2006, 10:37 PM Boy Maggie... I have no idea. I'm in the same boat... Lauren still has her red spots on her face and I have no idea what they are. She got a few new ones today. They don't seem to bother her though.
I'd call the allergist and see what he says. I don't know if the testing would have caused it or not.
AndrewsMommy 03-16-2006, 07:19 AM Maggie, that is weird...let us know what the allergist says, and I hope the mysterious rash fades quickly!
Noah's Mom 03-16-2006, 07:21 AM This is so strange. Before bed, I told dh that I didn't think Noah would have trouble sleeping and do the thrashing and screaming thing since he didn't actually have food in his stomach. HE DID IT ANYWAYS! It was awful. This is baffling me. Did those test actually cause the full mysterious reaction? What is going on inside of his body when this happens? It scares me.
AndrewsMommy 03-16-2006, 07:25 AM That is crazy....How did they do the allergy testing?? Did they inject small ammounts into different areas???
I would definately call the Allergist ASAP to see what he thinks....Is he old enough to take Benadryl?
ZacsMom 03-16-2006, 07:58 AM That's odd....if he's never done that before w/out food in his system and I'd have to lean towards teh testing. I wonder also, how'd they do it? Little surface pokes or what?
By the way, when do you hear about his results from the ph and other testing that was done re: his rash, etc....or did you already
scarlet 03-16-2006, 08:23 AM Maggie its not a milk allergy or protein intolerence is it?
Otherwise it definatley could be from the test I think, I would call the allergist.
What about the environment- new detergent, perfume, vacuuming, cat, dog anything?
Let us know how it is going.
Noah's Mom 03-16-2006, 09:42 AM I called and left a message for the allergist. Noah had the testing done on his back. The did the testing on the very surface of the skin, so its hard to imagine that it entered his system, but I'm not ruling it out since there is NOTHING else that it could be.
Sara, I don't have the probe results yet. I expect them by the end of this week. Yesterday, the nurse did call with negative Celiac results! I was thrilled since I was pretty worried about that one. That sounds like an awful thing to have to live with. I'll definitely keep you posted. By the way, Zac's new sig pic is so freakin' adorable!
AndrewsMommy 03-16-2006, 09:48 AM Maybe it is a fluke that he flared up right after the testing? you would think he'd get the rash on his back? So unpredictable!!! Let us know what the Allergist says...Glad to hear No Celiac!!!
Noah's Mom 03-16-2006, 09:59 AM I just spoke with the nurse who spoke with the allergist. He said that it is very rare that Noah's back is fine and that he reacted in this way, but he said that it was likely that it caused it since he didn't eat anything. He said that we will wait on the blood tests (due back mid next week) and see what they say. He is curious about a false negative, and the blood test might not even help. Why isn't there an answer to this?
AndrewsMommy 03-16-2006, 10:10 AM Did they do allergy testing when he had his scope???
I was told that was more accurate...They didn't for Andrew either, and I am still wondering if we are battling an intolerance to something with all his blowouts!
I hope you get answers soon.....How is Noah doing now?
Noah's Mom 03-16-2006, 10:21 AM The did do testing throug the biopsies taken during the scope. Everything came back negative. The GI said that they aren't necessarily accurate, but they should be. I don't really know what to think because I do trust tests like these, but Noah just seems to be having such an atypical reaction here. He is doing okay now, so I hope this reaction is shortlived.
AndrewsMommy 03-16-2006, 11:09 AM Me too...Poor Guy!
Emily M 03-16-2006, 07:59 PM Oh, poor Noah. He is having a horrible time. {{hugs}} to him and you. I hope that you get some answers soon Maggie.
ConnorsMommy 03-16-2006, 08:51 PM Oh Maggie how frustrating! I hope the rash goes away quickly and you get some answers from some of these tests!Hugs!
Carla 03-16-2006, 09:01 PM Maggie,
Allergies are very frustrating to me. Chelsea had similar symptoms as Noah. Scope biopsies always came back normal, RAST test was normal, and she had the skin test twice. The first was normal, the second was a MILD reaction to milk and soy. It was so mild they were calling it negative until I questioned it. She gets SO sick when she has milk and soy. She clearly is allergic to more things--she gets those mysterious red bumps/splotchy cheeks and I don't for the life of me know what it is to. The tests have always told me nothing. I go by symptom and at the moment have no idea what is causing these mew symptoms for her. She will be having more tests though so we'll see.
Gavin clearly has allergies but the RAST came back negative for everything, and he hasn't had a skin test yet. I am sure the allergist told you that allergy tests are inaccurate in kids our boys' age. It is often times a process of elimination based on symptoms. BTW, I would think his reaction was from the skin test, I saw the same thing in Chelsea when she had hers!!!!!!
Noah's Mom 03-16-2006, 10:08 PM Carla
Then YOU KNOW how terribly frustrating this really is! Is Chelsea tolerating food now that she didn't tolerate as a baby? Noah has seriously reacted terribly to every solids he has had. He didn't react to all of them the first time, but by the second, the reaction was bad enough for us to check it off our list. I'm not happy that your kids have this same issue, but I'm so happy to find someone else that has "this" going on. Did your doctors think it was as mysterious as mine do? Maybe my doctors aren't so good afterall?
maggie I am so sorry you are still going thru this. When you say he had a bad reaction, what was it exactly?
Maiya is miserable all the time-cant tell if she is reacting to anything. But today she had nosolids and so far is having a better night!???
Noah's Mom 03-19-2006, 12:31 AM Jojo
I am embarrassed to say that I didn't pinpoint Noah's reaction when he was first starting solids because it wasn't the typical one that the ped tells you to look for. He gets two different rashes. The first is red and splotchy and probably eczema. Then, he gets little red dots all over his face...or sometimes just maybe five. He screams as if in pain all throughout the night for several nights after the food.
You could always try giving Maiya a week break from solids and see if that leads to improvement. Good luck!
