Eliana is 16mos and currently says no words ... hopefully with her ST and OT she will be talking up a storm soon.

to be honest i'm not sure as I'm ar work when they visit ... my MIL is there but doesn't always remember what was done. I do need to contact the ST and OT by email and see how she is doing.

My son hardly said anything (just mama) until he was about 18 months old. Now he has a great vocabulary but doesn't use it much. He's just not much of a talker.

I hope Eliana starts making big improvements soon!

Does she make any sounds at all? Anything that sounds like she is trying to say a word? For instance, Iain will say "mo" for "more" and has plenty of jargon he uses consistantly for items, but it is still jargon. Has she had a hearing test done?

I know with Iain who was just recently assessed and will be starting the toddler program in May they usually just do play activities to spark some speech. For instance, she will take out a ball throwing set and wait for Iain to indicate that he wants that. If he points or says something then it is considered communication and then she takes it from there in trying to ellicit responses to the items and for interaction. Again for instance, she will ask Iain "ball?" and wait for his response. Grabbing is not what she wants, she wants a "mo" or "peas" ( his word for please) or a "ba" which is how he says ball. It is all about getting him to communicate in some way and rewarding him with what he wants.

she babbles ALOT ... points to what she wants no problem there ... not even half words like you said "mo" she doesn't do half words ... the only hearing test she had was as a newborn, but when pedi looked at her ears they were fine.

Jeannette...I just wanted to tell you, when I had Andrew in for his 18 month check up, I questioned at the time his speech. He doesn't say nearly as much as my first one did at this age.

And what he said to me was:

As long as they point to what they want, and foloow direction, it means their brains are processing the information and sometimes the speech comes later. He would not be concerned until he is two!

Hope that puts you at ease some...

yes it does (some), thanks ... just want her to talk instead of pointing and screaming when we don't understand what she wants

Jeannette,

Are you seeing any other delays or difficulties besides the speech? Is there a formal diagnosis or is everyone saying that it's just delayed speech? Are the OT and the SLP also working on oral motor, eating, and desensitizing around the mouth?

the only thing I see is speech. Some of her fine motor is 24mos and she's 16mos. they are saying delayed speech. they are working on oral motor, eating and desensitizing. the sitter is with her when the ST(friday's) and OT(monday's) come. I have to email them both for updates as the sitters doesn't remember everything. Thanks!
