View Full Version : Does It Take A While?
ConnorsMommy 03-13-2006, 08:33 PM I've been trying to get this child to like something else besides applesauce but so far that's our only winner! I tried bananas and he takes a few bites (making faces the whole time) and then starts gagging. Same with Peaches. Tonight I tried sweet potatoes and he did the same with them. Do you think that it just takes some time to get him use to new things or is he going to be a picky eater? Oh god, my mother wished I would have a child just like me (LOL) I ate cheese sandwiches everyday for 12 years(LOL)
Miori 03-13-2006, 08:37 PM I'm right there with you, Kim. Joshua hasn't loved veggies, which has worried me. I posted about it a week or so ago, I think.
I found a great solution...check out Tender Harvest by Gerber - they have fruit/veggie blends. So far, he loves their Apple-Sweet Potato blend!
Have you tried Pears? J loves those too.
Also, you can try mixing the veggie & fruit in the bites. It sounds awful to use, but he won't know that it is a bad combo, unless he doesn't like the taste.
sarahh 03-14-2006, 01:05 AM Yes, it will take a while. There were many things the boys did not like when we first started on the solids... but I would re-introduce them a few weeks later and they would eat them  Just keep doing what you are doing... introducing new foods every few days and then you could perhaps mix fruits with veges... just to get him used to differnet textures and the fruits just sweeten things up a bit (although I know you should do 1 food at a time, ratehr than mix them initially). Good luck!
scarlet 03-14-2006, 02:04 AM They say that for a child to get the taste it takes 5 times to introduce the food. After 5 times if he still doesn't like it cross it off the list.
Parker for a couple of months lived on nutella sandwhiches, and I didn't care cause at least he was eating!
I agree just keep introducing and reintroducing new foods, some of them will catch on with some perserverence.

Jackson also LOVES the apply/sweet potato blend, but I have only been able to get it twice, they've been out after that.
You made me LOL Kim~ cheese sandwiches! LOL:wink:
Noah's Mom 03-14-2006, 07:09 AM I can't offer much help here with Noah's feeding issues, BUT, he definitely likes things now that he didn't like when we first started. He kind of likes applesauce now, but he used to hate it. We really only feed him with the GI says we have to, so I don't have much more to go on.
CadysMommy 03-14-2006, 07:43 AM Yup! Try, try,try...and then, try again. I've heard it can take many, many tries before a baby likes food. Cady did that with stage 3 anything, but I kept at it and she ate it eventually and loved it.
KaitlynsMom 03-14-2006, 08:30 AM Honestly I think it can take about 20 tries to get some kids to like things. For the first couple months I could only give my daughter Apples, Pears and Banana's. She made nasty faces at cereal and anything else I gave her and gagged like crazy.
You really just have to keep going at it, it can take awhile. The first veggie my daughter would eat was Squash... then we went on from there to Sweet taters and peas and carrots.
Good luck... keep it up... arent those faces funny??
sixdogssixcats 03-14-2006, 08:53 AM It can take up to 20 introductions for a baby to accept a new flavor/texture. They will ALL spit out or gag on things they don't like. It's the only response a baby has, refluxer or not. They can't very well tell us they don't like it, lol!
New foods are great photo opportunities!
AndrewsMommy 03-14-2006, 10:05 AM Kim..it does take awhile for them to adjust to a new flavor...I remember when I started Andrew on Sweet Potaoes, the first bite he made this god awful face and spit it all out....Have pics to prove it, then I tried again, the next day, and then next day and he warmed up to it, and enjoyed them!!!
I would stick to one thing, and do it for like three days in a row, so he has a chance to taste the texture in full with out having other things given in that period...He may be getting all the different flavors, which can be challenging for someone so small, who cannot say Oh I like this, or Blah..I hate this!! I hope this made sense!!
