View Full Version : Hives Around Mouth

Emma ate 1/4 of a homemade blueberry pancake this morning. She has had the pancake mix before (made with one egg and rice milk) with no reaction, so I'm guessing it's the blueberries. She ate 2 Tablespoons of blueberries the other day (fresh - she popped them in her mouth like it was candy) and I didn't see any reaction. However, today right where the blueberries were smooshed (sp?) around her mouth she got three large irregular-shaped hives that were hot to the touch, reddish, and raised.

Over the next hour they began to fade. I had the bright idea to take a picture but they had already faded significantly.

Is this an allergic reaction? Is it serious enough to mention to her ped the next time we're in?

I'm obviously not going to give her anymore blueberries, but I just wanted to know what you ladies thought.

Thanks! :hello2:

A food reaction that results in hives usually hits much much faster. Any hives around the mouth area can be VERY serious and I would have you check inside her mouth to make sure there is no blisters there either. Curran gets something like a nettlerash in his mouth as he reacts. If she starts to show any signs of drooling or swallow problems you get to a hospital ok?

I wonder if she could have had something else that caused it? Could it be a contact hive? There is a possibility of hives coming and going as well but I would wonder why she did not show it yesterday as my experience has been within an hour at the most for hives in the mouth. I would think more it is the pancake mix instead, but someone else chime in here!

Leigh is right ... hives generally are not a delayed reaction. Could Emma have touched something in the house around the same time and then touched her face? Especially as she's had pancakes and blueberries before.

I was with her the entire time this morning. She couldnt have gotten into anything. :( She woke up, I changed her diaper, gave her Prevacid and then we went downstairs to make breakfast. I mixed her Bisquick pancake mix (used many times before) with one egg, rice milk, and added 1/4 cup of blueberries.

I made several pancakes in the pan using her dairy-free/soy-free butter for her, DH, and I.

The entire time I was making breakfast, DH was reading some books to her at the kitchen table.

She stayed in her booster seat throughout breakfast and the hives appeared while she was still eating, and in the exact spots where the blueberry was stained on her face. We cleaned her face, and at first, we thought it was just the stain that wouldn't come off, but it kept getting darker and then it started raising into welts.

Would it make a difference if when she ate the blueberries the other day, that she never crushed them? She practically swallowed them whole and didn't get ANY on her face.

:?:

I'm so confused. :(

I checked in her mouth after I read your post, but probably any blisters were gone by then. :(

Abby does the same thing with alot of foods. Ranch dressing is the worst. I would mention to the ped. bit I was told it is a contact thing and sensitive skin. Abby has never had a systemic reaction to any foods that do this to her, just the welts where the food touches her mouth. ikt's totally weird, but apparently common in allergic type kiddos. it doesn't neccesarilt indicate allergy, but I limit the foods that do it to Abby just in case.

Thank you, Melissa. :hello2: I will mention it to the ped. He is supposed to call me on Monday with Em's EKG results, so I'll run it by him then.

Amanda

When Noah was in the hospital this week, the pediatrician keeping tabs on him explained to me that it is very possible that Noah would not react to a food the first time, and then react every time after. He told me this after I explained this occuring with almost every food he's tried. I hope she's not allergic...blueberry pancakes are so yummy!

Hmmm...I get hives like that too, but not usually from food. Often, it is from an airborne allergen, like a fragrance or something. Have you changed cleaning products, had a candle going?

I was going to say what Maggie just said... that it may still be a reaction to the pancakes even though she has had them before. It could also be something as simple as the lifter you used came in contact with something she is allergic to or something was already on the plate, etc. With Curran's peanut allergy we had to be so very very careful as you would not believe how foods can be transmitted. Follow a fork around and see how many times it can come in contact with something it should not for an allergic kid.

Anyway, I am glad she had no blisters in her mouth. It could very well be she never did, it is a sign that the reaction is much worse when they do and then you really have to start checking the airway. Curran gets the blisters in his mouth within a half hour or so of ingestion and it is ugly to see. He screams his mouth hurts and I have come so very close to jabbing him with the epi pen. We have been instructed not to hesitate now as his reactions may get stronger and faster in time and we can waste time waiting to see if Benedryl will work for him. Ack.

How is she tonight? Any hives still? She may be coming down with something as well. IT would be unusual to see it around the mouth first but keep an eye for any other rashes. Be sure to let us know what the ped says.

I just got off the phone with the ped. He thinks it is the blueberry since the hives were in the exact spot the stains were. :(

No berries for Em.
