Okay, we were giving emily a trial run of rice again for thickening. She was eating better, in that she hasn't choked at all since starting it again, but is still have very low intake. She is also much more relaxed during feeds. Now however, she has started the vomiting everything up two hours later game again, and it is full of mucous. So now I am thinking that she IS allergice to rice after all. I would like to thicken with Thick-it. Those of you who are using it, can it be allergenic? Does it cause the same constipation that rice does? I swear its like I traded one thing for another. Any ideas?

Sorry, I have not used thick it at all and thickening did not work for us, but many others have had great success with it and will hopefully be along to remark on it. I am going to move this to feeding issues though so that it will be seen by those with that experience.

What about oatmeal cereal to thicken? Have you tried that already?

Good luck.

I haven't tried oatmeal. Now I am so worried about allergies with this kid that I would rather use thick it if it isn't allergenic. I think the GI was wanting her to have the extra calories of the cereal. Does thick it have calories? I just don't know what to do. Either she doesn't puke, but gags and chokes trough her feeds and then refluxes into her nose constantly between feeds, or she eats smoothly but now is puking it ALL up. I guess I will be calling th GI AGAIN on monday. They are going to know me by my voice.

Man, it is always something isn't it? I have just started using Thick It with Mason, though I have no clue if I am even doing it right. So pardon if I hijack your thread a little (hehe) and ask questions on thickening.... but let me answer yours first :)

The only two ingredients in the Thick It are corn starch and maltodextrin so allergy risk is low. I suppose if tehre is a corn allergy, but corn stuff is in almost all the formulas as well. I would defintaely go get some and try it. My GI suspects allergies with Mason which is why they had me get this stuff. It does have extra caloried as well.

That being said, what consistency is thickened formula supposed to be?

Also, can you refridgerate thickened formula if thickened with corn strach?

How is it going? Have you begun with thick it yet?

Not yet, we only have 1 pharmacy in town who carries it and they are closed on sunday. We are going to start tomorrow. It is just corn starch from what I gather, and since Neocate is sweetened with corn syrup and she if fine on it, then I assume that thick-it won't bother her. Wish us luck.

If she's fine on Neocate i would not worry. My Thick It container only lists 2 ingredients...modified Cornstarch and Maltodextrin.

I do not know what maltodextrin is...sugar I think? The modified part just means you do not have to heat it to thicken it like normal cornstarch (saw that on the Web). It also says on the Web site (the linik is above in one of the posts) that it is safe for infants though it says nothing at all about any age on the carton.

you could also try simply thick, we used that for about 5-6 months.

We chose Thick It b/c it has fewer ingredients than the Simply Thick and they were all corn based which we knew Evan was fine on. We do 1tbsp per 5ozs and it's just a little thicker. It's all up to you and your baby how thick you want it. We also use it for solids as well.

We have used both on Zoee.....Thick it does have calories but I didn't think many amount of calories and simply thick does not. We have to use Simply thick for Zoee b/c of her diabetes so that is how I know that.
