Now, here is a new one. I think that Jackson is MSPI he has never been "diagnosed" but, all of the symptoms seem to point in that direction. So, I figured out the soy in the Gerber, don't know if there was enough in there to bother him, but I switched to Beech-nut.
Yesterday I bought some new lotion and baby wash by Huggies that is "Shea Butter". I used it last night, loved it, it smelled so good and is really soft. This morning Jackson's little face has a tiny bumpy rash on it. It is not red, but bumpy, on both sides of his cheek bones. I pull out the Huggies stuff and it has SOYBEAN OIL in it. Is it possible if he is intolerant to soy that this would break out his face if used on his skin????!!! *This boy is going to drive us crazy!** LOL
And I looked up Shea Butter and read that people with allergies to nuts can not use Shea Butter. WTH. Who ever would have thought about that???!!!

Could the soy in it have broken him out, or the shea butter???:coffee: help.....

Emily is diagnosed soy allergic and the lotions with soybean oil break her out the same way! you'd be suprised how nmany lotions have it.

Hmm.......Kylie was not tested for soy but absolutely cannot tolerate soy formula or Gerber oatmeal. So I self-diagnosed her as soy intolerant. You've given me something else to ponder as her rash has gone when I switched to a no scent bodywash from the shea butter with the latest allergy caused sinus infection. I had absolutely no idea.....thanks for posting this. Anything that helps stop the flow of antibiotics into our house is greatly appreciated!

Is it a bumpy rash, but not red?? This all is very confusing! LOL:dizzy:

Emily, I would say it moe likely that he is allergic to the actual wash. I actually dont use any type of wash in the bath with my kids for that reason, it dries out there skin, can cause rashes and eczema.

How is he with other washes?

I usually use the Playtex baby wash and it has never bothered him. Also, I use either Aveeno w/Lavendar lotion or Johnson's baby lotion, it too never hurt him. Hmm... I just told my dh, I wonder if my ped. would refer us to an allergist, I know that it sometimes is not conclusive at his age, but maybe he can give us some heads up! LOL

Switch back to the one that doesn't bother him, and let the allergist know about the reaction. I am in the process of seeing an allergist I have to goto the ped for a referral, my Dr said that even f everything is OK, at least you know and you aren't putting a baby at risk with elimination.

So, your ped. referred you and didn't question it??
I have a REALLY good allergist here, he used to be my doc. when I was little and is now an allergist, I love him, he is great with kids and I would like to get his "opinion" on Jackson. I agree, you do put them at risk with elimination. I worry about peanut butter, milk, soy, etc.
I shall call tomorrow and get a referral. Thanks!

I don't know how it works over there but to see a specialist you have to go to a Dr and get a referal, like to a ped. I was at my normal dr on Fri with Park over the same thing, I think he has milk allergy but is it MSPI, I dont know, he also gets the allergy look, red rimmed eyes, this could be hayfever whatever but I want to know now- i have had enough of guessing games. My Dr did give me the name to get for the referrla and he is a ped. allergist and he said he does the testing and is quite good.

I would definately go to the allergist now, think of the guessing game you dont have to play. makes a lot of sense.

I agree totally! We are the same here, is it MSPI or what??!!
Thanks girlfriend! I'm sure that my ped. will give us a referral. We must have it for insurance purposes.:blackeye:

Generally soy allergic and intolerant children can tolerate soy oil and soy lecithin. I would think it's something else in the lotion besides that that would make him react. If he has sensitive skin, it's best to stick w/ very basic washes, nothing w/ fragrance or color.

If he is only intolerant , and not truly allergic to soy then it was prob not the soy oil that did it. Intolerance deals more with problems w/ digestion.

So, if he is "allergic" to soy, it could be the soy oil??? I am wondering if he is truely allergic to milk and soy not intolerant???
He had true "allergic" symtpoms while on regular cow's milk formula.

did he have a reaction to the soy in the gerber? (like rash/hives wheezing etc) if it is a true allergy even a little bit of soy would prob cause a reaction. Alexys has an allergy to milk and if a little bit even touches her skin she breaks out in hives and a rash that last for days...if it is a true allergy then it is possible that it could be the soy, although as jennifer said most kids that cant handle soy do find with the oil. I know we have had our share of problems with different lotions but i think mostly just because of sensitive skin, certain ones are okay while others are not. I would just stay away from that lotion (which DOES smell good its the one we use lol) and keep an eye out for reactions to soy that is ingested, and what his reactions are.

Thank you Amy. I will see what my ped. says about the whole allergy thing at our 6 month check up.

I am really wierd about lotions, and I would only use Vaseline on Noah until our recent hospital stay. Our doctor sent us home with a tub of Eucerin to use on his eczema. It really helps the dry scaly skin, but it does nothing to the red, bumpy rash. You can buy it OTC.

Eucerine is good, as is Libriderm, both great for sensitive skin, along with Dove Sensitive skin soap. Had to use these things with my older one...she'd break out with baby soap, so we went that route.

This is what was weird, I used Johnson's, Playtex, and Aveeno on him before this. He tolerated all of them fine. The Johnson's I used the lavendar scented, vapor bath, etc.
That's what makes me wonder if it was the soy oil in it, or just he can't handle that brand. I am probably reading way too much into the whole thing! LOL
He still has a little rash. It is weird, not real noticeable, but not flawless baby skin.

Hmmmm I just saw this post Emily. That's an interesting thought. Connor has really bad excema and I use The playtex baby magic and he does ok with it too. He did break out in a rash after I used sunblock on him for the first time. I wonder what the ingredients were? Does Jackson have any other signs of mspi?

Yes, when we switched him back to regular Enfamil after his GERD was diagnosed, he went for about 3 days, refusing to eat at all. Would not take it. His eyes got watery and runny, his nose got "stuffier" and runny. It was horrible, I thought he had a cold. No, dh went and bought a can of Nutramigen **he was on it before** and he IMMEDIATELY took his bottle. Within a couple of days, it all cleared up.
I told my ped. I asked him if I was weird for thinking that Jackson KNEW that the Enfamil would hurt his tummy, he said that his grandson would not ever eat peanuts or peanut butter. Wouldn't get near it, then one day, by accident he did and he broke out like crazy. So, he said that kids and babies are smart and he most certainly might know by the smell that it would hurt him.
He has never been tested, but just the elimination thing. So, I don't know if it is an intolerance or an allergy.
