Two questions: 1) I've noticed that some people are using oatmeal instead of rice cereal in the bottle - is this due to allergy? My sister-in-law and I were brainstorming, and think my little guy could be allergic/intolerant to rice cereal which he's had in the bottle for a little over 2 weeks, plus some as a solid for a week. He has lots of patches of dry skin (sometimes red) on his trunk area and legs that have recently gotten worse, olive green stools since starting the rice cereal, and the red ring on his bum others have mentioned on this message board. 2) If we go with oatmeal, our ped GI said to find a source of oat cereal that's gluten-free (ie, not made in a wheat-processing plant) due to my brother's wheat/gluten allergy - anyone know of a source (we live in San Francisco)? Many thanks.

I would think you would just have to read the back of the box to make sure there is no gluten in it....Do you have an organic store around you? Alot of times those stores are the best to find specific products!

Good Luck, I hope it all works out!

Read on Beechnut cereals, I know that they are the only ones w/o soy. Maybe they are gluten free too. I would check it out.

Bran, wheat bran, wheat gluten, wheat germ, cereal filler, cereal binder, cereal protein, farina, flour, wheat starch, rusk, semolina, durum wheat, starch, modified starch, hydrolysed starch, food starch, edible starch, vegetable protein, vegetable gum, vegetable starch. I found this on a site that said these ingredients listed on any baby foods could indicate that there is gluten in them. It also said though, if it is specifically said to be gluten free, even if it contains these ingredients then it is okay. I don't know if this helps, but I thought I would post it anyway.

We have just started using oatmeal to thicken B's liquids; however, we do it b/c she battles constipation and rice is known for binding kids up.

Unfortunately, you'll have to check the labels to see if they contain any gluten. *sigh* If it's not one thing, it's another, right? :-(
