View Full Version : Daniel's tube has a hole!

I noticed it leaking a tiny bit at dinner and tonight at bedtime, DH found the hole. Tomorrow we'll have to have it fixed or replaced. I think replacing means yanking the old one and sticking in a new one with a two percent chance of tearing the stomach lining.

Help! I need reassurance.

As if I needed this on top my D's sinus and ear infections, my ear infection, and unwanted houseguests arriving tomorrow.

Oh Becky...I haven't been around much the last few days since my husband is home!! I hope you guys are feeling better after the week you had!!! I have my fingers and toes crossed for you and D that it is something they can fix.....without removing it!!!!!

OK, we just got more info from the on-call GI. Our appointment is at 9 a.m. Mountain. If the tube needs to be replaced, D will have to be put under anesthesia. Please keep us in your thoughts.

Oh Becky. :( I sure hope this is an easy fix. His site has been so good and never leaked!

I, being the Google Queen, read up on the g-tube before I posted. But, I'm still a bit clueless. Where is the hole at? How would it have gotten a hole in it? Yikes!

I hope he doesn't have to go under.

Thinking of you....

We're pretty sure we know exactly how it happened. Saturday, John put D in his booster when he was already connected to his pump, and the tubing was a real mess, wrapped around his leg, etc. (Usually we hook him up after putting him in the booster.) So when I picked him up, the tubing got snagged somewhere, and it pulled on his button really hard. In fact, the little metal piece that opens the valve came off the extension tube and was stuck in his button -- formula was shooting everywhere! So we had to clamp his G tube and use little pliers to pull out the metal piece. It seems like everything was fine. But the tiny little tear in the G tube is right at the bottom of where his button fits into the tube. I'm sure that the yank the button took Saturday made it pull against the tube and tear it.

I know. Without actually seeing our equipment, it's probably impossible to understand my explanation. But the whole thing was avoidable and entirely John's and my fault. :(

Becky...Don't beat yourself up over it...You and John wouldn't intentionally tear D's tube...Complete mistake, and it could have happened to anyone!!!

I know what you mean. I can picture it.

My aunt had a g-tube (she had a brain aneurysm as a child and was in an adult care facility most of her life). We visited almost every weekend when I was little. She didn't have the button, though.

Let us know how everything goes tomorrow....

You'll probably think this is weird, but I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason. Maybe if this hadn't of happened, something worse could have happened to the tube....(not to think negatively)

Oh, just ignore me! ;)

Yeah, but, we still feel pretty crappy.

On the up side, I've been meaning to mention that D's OT started the spit-in-a-cup plan, and it's going well. I don't even put a bib on him anymore and the floor hardly needs any mopping after a meal. Can't wait to see how this will move from spit-in-a-cup to swallow-what-you-chew. We have a feeding appt tomorrow but I don't know if we'll make it.

Maybe our houseguests will decide they should stay at a motel after all when they hear what a day we've had!

So sorry to hear about your situation Becky. I'm praying that this will be an easy fix and D won't have to go under for it. He and you don't need this after all the sickness.

We'll be thinking about you and let us know what happens.

I'm going with Amanda on this one... I, too, believe that everything happens for a reason...i.e., when I'm driving down the road with a slow car in front of me and everytime I go to pass, there is another car coming in the opposite direction, I always believe that God put those cars there to possibly avoid an accident.... I know, I'm weird.

Daniel has a G tube (no fundo). Yeah, OT seems to be working out so far. He had a really good session Friday when I stayed home sick, so I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next.

All fixed! We were lucky that D's tube stuck out kind of far, so the GI could just cut it behind the hole and stick in a new button. But now we know this tube will have to be replaced by the end of the year and we know all about the possible complications.

Off to feeding therapy in 20 minutes. It was practically right next door to the GI's so I called a few times hoping we could just come in early, but I only got voicemail.

That's fantastic that the GI could fix it! ;) Does it have to be replaced every year?

At first, she saw where the hole was, looked really worried, and asked if D had skipped breakfast (meaning, could we put him under), but then she decided she do the fix instead! Phew!

The tube is supposed to be replaced every 18 to 24 months, but those of us who use them all the time subject them to more wear and tear.

Oh Becky...I'm sorry I missed this but wanted to say that I'm glad it seemed to go pretty uneventful and was an easy fix. Hey, maybe he won't need it replaced afterall, maybe by then they'll be able to REMOVE it ??? What do ya think ;) In any event very glad to hear it was fixed.
